Default 2-7x28 vs 3-9x40!! ??

looking for a scope for my .22 wmr...i was looking on the leupold site, and they havea vxI-2-7x28 "rimfire" scope which is $199, but for $20 more i could get a vxI-3-9x40. any reason i shouldn't be getting the bigger objective???? i noticed that the rimfire models have a "fine duplex" recticle while rifle scopes have a "duplex." ?

this gun is going to be used mostly for squirrels/rabbits/groundhogs out to 100 yards

well sometimes a huge objective would just look goofy and may be unneeded......

what is this scope going to be for? if its on a .22 ? I can't imagine needing the bigger scope.

and 40 may look pretty huge on a lil .22 rifle

WhenI had a .22wmr it wore 3x9x40CF scopes. I now have a .17hmr with varmit barrel and have a 3x12x44 on it, looks ok but more importantly works very well.On a .22lr the smaller looks and works better but we're talking a 22 Mag so go which ever you think works/looks the best.

Rimfire scopes also have a 50 or 75yard parallax adjustment and the others are at least 100+ yards so you might want to adjust that.

thanks for the replies! i was thinking i'm just going to get the bigger 3-9x40, 'cause then at least if i get rid of the gun at a later date, i can put the scope onto something else. so i'm going to take my vx1-3-9x40 off my muzzleloader and put it on the .22. hopefully this scope will be OK for dusk/early morningsituations, i've only ever used the vx1 when there's snow on the ground (lots of ambiant/reflecting light) otherwise i'll have to get another vx3

Oldelkhunter IS correct! Rimfire scopes are adjusted at factory to be paralax free @ 50 yards. Scopes designed for centerfire rifles are adjusted for 100 yards(or in leupold's case-150). Go for a rimfire scope.
