Illuminated scope reticles
 

Can anyone please explain to me how they work for the size of the dot with zoom and distance. I have a 2moa aimpoint and i know that covers 2" at 100yds and 4 at 200yds but with a leupold German # 4 or sarovorski TDS-4i is there a set dot size at a given distance or is it variable do to the magnification adjustment. Does the dot like the reticle stay the same size. any help would be aprechiated.

This really has nothing to do with the scope being illuminated or not, it has to do with the optics inside the scope. Some scopes magnify the reticle with the target, most do not. It depends on what focal plane the reticle is on.

Usually you see this referred to when talking about Mil Dot reticles. Since you use them to range objects you have to know the size of the dots and the distance between them at a specific range. If your variable power scope does not focus the dots on the second plane as power increases the range estimation will be way off. So you need to know at what power your scope is accurate.

The same thing will happen with a single dot like you are asking about. The type of reticle is not the issue either, but the type of scope. I don't know if the scopes you are talking about focus the reticle on the second plane or not. I looked but couldn't find anything. I know that some swarovski's do, not sure about Leupold. I would think some of the Tactical units would.

Theses types of scopes are VERY expensive though. Most normal scopes will not focus the reticle on the second plane.

If someone does not answer your specific question try emailing the companies that make the scopes, or some of the optics sales sites might know as well.

Or maybe find a sniper or long range shooting forum. They might know more about these types of optics.
