Newbie to scopes and hunting...

Hi guys. I am going to go hunting for the first time this year and plan on buying my first rifle and scope soon. I was wondering if you guys could give me a suggestion on a good first scope for a newbie. Also what else do I need to buy with the scope. I am trying to keep the cost low. I also asked this guy in the gun forum about a gun so if you guys have a suggestion about it let me know. I want to spend 500-600 total for my scope and gun. From what I read here the scope is the most important thing. So does buying a 200 or 250 gun and a 300 scope sound dumb? But the lower the price the better so give me some ideas. Thanks ,Ryan

RE: Newbie to scopes and hunting...

Check out Rossi or H&R, these are single shot rifles that cost between $200 & $250. One of these paired with a Bushnell elite or a Nikon buckmasters scope and you would be out about $400. Another option is a Savage bolt action that comes with a Simmons scope for around $400. I would recommend that you updated the Simmons scope within a season or two for a better quality scope. And no, it not unusual to spend more for the scope than the gun. Check your local gun shop for a good used setup also.

I would buy a stevens model 200 for $275-300 (Savage without accutrigger). Then spend $175-225 on a Burris FFII, Nikon, or bushnell 3200. That will put you around $500 and leave a $100 for scope rings, sling, bipod, scope covers, ammo, cleaning kit, etc.
