slapping the scope while sighting
I was out on range with my bother in law, when ajusting his scope I saw him slap the scope, What is the prepose of slapping scope?

RE: slapping the scope while sighting
The practice of slapping or pecking on scope after making a adjustment came about from cheaper or older scopes and was meant to "settle" scope adjustment so that it wouldn't move after recoil from discharge. If you have a GOOD scope, this is completely uneccecary.

RE: slapping the scope while sighting
I have to admit, I do it. I picked up that habit from bench shooters. Especially when using target turrets and dialing up like 6MOA for a 600 yard shot. does it make a difference? Who knows. I just know on occasion, I will dial up like 8.5MOA and my first shot will be a complete miss for my second shot perfect.

RE: slapping the scope while sighting
if you scope tracks true(and not many lesser scopes do) its unneeded. ive seen ALOT of scopes that wont move until you tap it a couple times or until you fire a round.
they say even most leupolds dont track true. i guess i got lucky with my 6-18AOT. when sighting in i measured and counted clicks i needed to move..it was right on. when shooting longer range groundhogs i will "click" my distance in and it works great. i aint about to smack or tap a 450$ piece of glass:D |
RE: slapping the scope while sighting
I don't slap my scopes, and I use tascos (for right now, please don't kill me). I guess I am lucky. they ajust fine, you may have to site them to the hole to get them to take, but it saves me ammo in the long run and a little time, it is the way I like to do anyway.
I am just scare to slap my scopes, some of us, get what we can get, get something else later. ;) |

RE: slapping the scope while sighting
I did not know that long range shooters do that, I guess we all learn something everyday

RE: slapping the scope while sighting
I guess I'll go ahead and admit to doing it as well. Do I think it makes a difference? Not really but it makes me feel like I'm doing something productive. I know it came from back when scopes were not made well and you had to "help" them move.
