Cabelas alaskan guide 6.5-20x44 too much for 30-06?

Is the scope in the subject line too much power for a 30-06? I received this scope for Christmas from my parents. My only hunting rifle at this point is a Remington 700 in 30-06, and I hunt in central, east, and south Texas. Mainly deer, hogs, predators. None of my shots are typically over 150 yards. I'm not planning on getting another gun anytime soon, and if I did it would probably be a 243 that my wife could use.

My other dilema is that this scope was purchasedthrough a family friend who works at Cabela's 200 miles away from where I live. An amazing discount was given on the scope. It was about a $150 discount.I dont think Ican exchange itfor another and getan employeediscounted price on the other scope. If not,I would get less of a scope for the same price. Do you see what I mean?

Need advice.

WAY TOO MUCH SCOPE!!! but nice to have "kinda like a magnum;)"
Maybe consider a getting a 2-7 or3-9 and two sets of QuickRelease leupold rings and base...
The higher power is great for target practice
but it only has about 6 3/4mm exit pupil, not enough for a good healthy eye at dark.
I hardly ever turn my scopes past 6x for shots 250yrds or less.
my opinion.

That's a lot of scope for sure. You might want to just leave it set a 6.5X Some people consider6X ideal for overall hunting. Don't know what type of cover you hunt, but that might be a solution to your dilema.
Hope you get something worked out.

Holy Cow, only place I put a 6.5-20 or anything like that is a varmint rig. I used to put 3X9's on my guns, but now, I have gone down to 1.5-5 these days for most.

Dang! I don't know what to do. The last 3 animals I shot were 2 deer and 1 hog, all within 40 yards of my muzzle. 6.5 power is way too much for 40 yards. Gosh, the 4 power scope I shot with was even more than enough. 20 power seems like it COULD be beneficial, but I don't even think the 30-06 is an appropriate match for that powerful of a scope.

My family hasland in east texas. The terrain consists of thick brush with some open fields. By open fields, I don't mean canyons and miles of flat land. I mean about300 yards from onetree lineto another. I also hunt in south texas, but the brush is so thick down there, you could get away with a 2 power scope.

My question is, keep the scope or exchange/sell it?

I think your answered your own question with your last post. You don't need it.

If you have intentions of getting a varmint rifle, keep it...

You underestimate the .308 of 1906
I say keep it. It was a gift.
But you do need a 2-7 or 3-9.
