Whats Snowshoe Like?
For yall that have already been to the shoot at Snowshoe.. Whats it like? Alot of up and down hill shots? Flat Shots? What is the expected winning score in the Hunter Class? Thanks

RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
bjcrawfo, Snowshoe is great! Its not flat, its probably some of the steepest mountains in WV. The ranges start at the top of the moutain and you shoot down to the bottom. When you are done you get on a ski lift and ride back to the top. If you are staying on top of the mountain you can park your car when you get their and not have to get back in it untill you leave. YOU NEED TO BRING FOOD WITH YOU! It is very expensive to eat up their. The nearst Macdonalds is about and hour away in Elkins. Their is also a Walmart in Elkins if you come in that way you can get your food their.

RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
So if you are shooting down the mountain, is all the shots downhill? I have a condo reserved at rimfire in the village....I have heard that the food is very expensive. We plan to cook in our room. We have a full kitchen in the rooms that we are staying in.

RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
They are not all downhill, you just work your way down, flat shots are pretty much out of the question. Bring a good pair of hikers with you. Oh and don't shoot the live targets, you will see plenty of those there, bear & deer. Snowshoe is a beautiful place, my best advice is to go have a great vacation, meet wonderful new people, and most of all just have fun. You will never meet a better group of people.

RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
Very steep and slippery if wet! You zig-zag your way across ski slopes and the strip of woods that separate the slopes. Elevation is 4848 ft. so the view is impressive!

RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
BJ One thing that was not mentioned about Snowshoe was the weather. The mountain weather is cool. Some days are warm, some are cool, and some are cold. It is hard to think cool in August when you are in Alabama but it can happen on Snowshoe.

RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
It is one of the most beautiful places in the Eastern half of the USA. A great place for the family.
|
RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
And best of all it's quiet.
No trucks. Just the breeze and the pitter patter of little deer feet. Unless you are standing to close to me. Then it can get kinda loud.:( Although with a little luck, not this year. ken12 |
RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
It is the best shoot on the whole IBO Tour (By Far!!!). The ranges are steep and sometimes a bit messy. One thing is true for sure the total overall experience out weighs every negative. Oh Yeah... Ken, will the "World Shoot" stay in Snowshoe for good now or what???
Mark my vote to keep it there. |
RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
aw cmon ken, after you combed your hair back into place you couldnt even tell all that hot air hit you.....you are a better man than i, i think i would have forgotten my position in the world when the bs really started flying....good job on your part...
as for snowshoe, i think all good things have been said, i would reccomend bringing a camera, if for some chance it is not fogged in on the mountain in the morning, you can get some unbelievable pictures to the south. you are actually above the fog, and it looks like a valley of snow below you. kinda like flying above the clouds.... no matter how cute and cuddly the bears seem, remember they are wild animals, keep a good distance between you and them and all will be fine, if that fails, kick your buddies feet out from under him, and run......and hope he can whip the bear....:D |
RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
One word for you: AWESOME!!!! You will love it.....and if you have the time check out Dolly Sods Wilderness Area( doubt you will have time but it's close)......blueberries and huckleberries should be ripe about now. Ooops let out a state secret. Watch out for Rattlers though......

RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
its a great place to shoot nice terrain, good people, lots of stuff to do for the family. and its even better when you dont get pulled off of your course on the final day on the last target when your 8 up and then get told that the score you just shot doesnt count!!! but if that doesnt happen again everything should be awesome!!

RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
BHLimer,
Now come on, we have done everything we can think of(and many of you too) to make it work for everyone. Just remember that we are going to be outdoors and weather happens. Contrary to some it happens everywhere. But, I have it from the highest authority on earth, not this year. I just hope he got it from a higher authority. ken12 |
RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
As long as your "higher authority" isn't the National Weather Service there is hope !!!

RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
Mixed feelings. To be sure, it's mighty pretty. If you're not staying in one of the places in the mountaintop complex, then parking is pretty much unavailable. If you are, then ventilation is pretty much unavailable, but maybe the weather will be cooler and breezier than last year. We had two decent-sized fans in our condo, but needed a couple more. I ended up sleeping in the back of my truck in the parking lot, where the air was somewhat cooler.
Food was good, but prices were kind of steep, about like any tourist place where the nearest McDonalds is an hour away. The cafeteria-style breakfasts in the restaurant near the sign-in place were reasonable and pretty decent. The restaurants at the foot of the mountain were pretty good and reasonable in price. The courses are mighty pretty. Rocky, slick as all get out if it rains or there's much heavy fog (and there's usually much heavy fog in the early mornings), and challenging. Lots of angles, and shooting through narrow "tunnels" in the trees. The courses I saw were well set and presented a very good mixture of ranges and situations. Can't fault the crew who set the course at all. They did a fine job with the terrain they had to work with. The view from the lifts is really neat when they run. They seemed fairly reliable last year, but we ended up waiting around forever for shuttle busses the year before because the lifts were usually out of commission. Then last year they were shut down temporarily after someone forty miles up the valley thought they heard thunder. The locals who work there are about the nicest and friendliest people you'll ever meet, and so are the local folks down the road, for the most part. The personnel putting on the shoot were also very easy to get along with. Polite and knowledgable for the most part, with the exception of a bit of understandable temporary confusion when the weather crossed them up. So, if you're staying on the mountain and your condo is un-air-conditioned, like most, bring some extra fans. If you're staying elsewhere, just have the chauffer drop you off in front of the main entrance and park somewhere near the bottom of the hill, where you can reach him on the two-way, because your cell phone probably won't do much good there. At least mine didn't. But it's mighty pretty. My personal opinion is that it would be a great place to visit for a family vacation, and a poor place to try to host an archery tournament. But it is really pretty. Watching the deer walking around on the open areas as the rising sun started to pierce through the early morning fog was among the nicest views I've seen anywhere. I've been twice now and may be back again in spite of the negatives I stated above. However, if we're voting, my vote would go towards looking for someplace out of those stormy, foggy mountains to hold such a weather-dependent event. Yes, it rains everywhere, but some places much more than others. Yes, they have lightning everywhere, but not nearly as much most places as they have on mountaintops. Most places they don't need to shut everything down because of a storm forty miles away. Yes, they have muggy nights in other places in August, but the motels most everywhere else are air-conditioned. I'm not recommending that anyone NOT go, by any means. If you're even thinking about it, then it would be a good idea to go at least once and experience it. Just trying to let some folks in on the things they might want to prepare for, and to express the opposing opinion about whether staying there would be a good idea long-term. |

Wow... I almost find it funny I had to dig all the way back to a 2004 post to find any mention of the fiasco that was the 2003 World shoot! Funny how all the 1000's of post from Aug 2003 have "disapeared" along with the scores from the shoot. I wonder if any 1 of the 100's of shooters who demanded a refund, ever recieved one? If you weren't there, you missed one helluva near redneck riot ![]() |
RE: Whats Snowshoe Like?
And now I see on another forum, reports they handed out "beer mugs" as trophies to kids this year.
