What do we need to do to get more money?
I am shooting the National Triple Crown this year and it is costing me quite a bit of money. Even if I was to win all the shoots I still cant cover travel expences. Don't get me wrong I love the sport and I will compete in archery as long as I can find a shoot. But it sure would be nice if you could make enough money to make all this travel affordable. What do we do?
Raise entry fees? Ask the IBO to pay out a higher percentage? Pay less spots? Give the hosting clubs less? Help me out here lets help make the IBO more profitable for the shooter wouldnt that be nice? |

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
Just my take. IF you are shooting for the money and you are NOT a pro then you are in it for the wrong reasons. Now don't get me wrong I like to make a little money too but If I don't win on a given weekend I have already accounted to not have all the money spent for that weekend. A poll was taken and the shooters wanted to pay back 20% of the field. WHICH means less money at the top because everyone wants paid. It really is a no win situation. If you are at the top of the class less money but if you are in the top 20% you get some money no matter what. I think most of the money needs to stay in the top of the class. If I don't win then I don't deserve as much money, it is as simple as that. I have saw where you can be 5 places apart and less that $50 different in prize money. Is this fair? Not to me BUT that is what the majority wanted and I will live with it. You all got what you asked for so stop whining and start shooting better. Just my opinion. Bowjunkie

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
I agree with paying 20% of the field. I also agree that you shouldn't shoot just for the money. I shoot semi pro and I love to shoot but I do think if you have a good day you should more then pay for your travel. It gets expensive going to all the shoots. I don't think the problem is how much of the field gets paid but rather how much of the entry fee gets paid back out. I'm not 100% sure on this but I'm pretty sure that ASA gets less shooters then IBO but pays the same or better. To really get paybacks the sport need to find outside sponsors to kick in some money. Instead of getting these ripoff concession vendors have pepsi kick in some cash and set up at the shoots. There are so many companies that could add a little bit just like that but they're not envolved for whatever reasons.

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
looking at this from the broadest perspective, if you need more money put more money into the organization you participate in.....i know entry fees are high, but if you take money away from the people who put on these shoots, they cannot put on the shoots.
looking at it from a corperate perspective, and dont get me wrong, i love this sport dearly, but why would they put money into it? they are only reaching the actual participants at the shoot, ie, rome ga, 490 shooters. there arent any galleries full of fans following you around the shoot, or 400,000 screaming people watching you drive in circles, it is not a media event. until it becomes one, we survive on our own money. there is no benefit in advertising with archery events. no one sees it. i dont understand how people think folks are getting rich off of ibo shoots, go buy enough targets to put one on, and secure the facilities, and the land, and the folks to run it, and see how rich you get off of 1000 participants. after years of hosting maybe, but not overnight. i am thankful that there are people who are willing to work untold hours for little return, other than the satisfaction of seeing a shoot run well and no one get hurt. pay a smaller percentage of the field, or increase the money in the pot. or if you are real inventive, find corperate sponsors who will dole out money and support all of us. just a few million to start, so i can recoup all of my money:D |
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
This would be funny if some people weren't so serious about it. Exactly how much do you need to make to pay for your shooting. Most people do this because they love this sport and not for the money. If the money is all you can think about maybe you should find a different hobby(something that is free, perhaps).

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
:D There is this guy by the name Tiger Wood's that plays some game called "GOLF" maybe you should consider changing sports, Lucky, former long bow world champ, did $$$$$;)

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
It's pretty easy to tie up $1000 in a weekend of shooting. Figure air fare, rental car, meals, hotel, registration. Take the over a course of a year and it's real expensive. Winning money along the way helps to ease the pain a little hehe.

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
I dont want to play golf! Im into archery and I can shoot good scores most of the time therefore I would like to see higher payouts to help cover my expences. Hey im happy for you if you enjoy just the archery part mabe when you do win some money you will donate it all back to the hunters defence fund. I love archery but I love the competition more and yes like 60X says a little money along the way can ease the pain. Thats all Im saying Im up for higher entry fees if thats what it takes. And If you dont want the fees shoot the trophy class.

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
[&:]Varmint, before you make comments that don"t even make any sense, one should find out whom they might be talking about. I have and will always be willing to shoot for $$$. any time any place!! Too this day I have paid and have recieved $$$$ Remember that when fees go up shooters will be less, this IS A FACT!!! Archery for most shooters is for fun, not $$$. Yes it does cost money to go to shoots, but one was aware of the cost before one decided to go into archery. Oh how about all the archers that don't shoot for $$$. and pay the price to just enjoy the sport.

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
Easy long bow champ I will be at all the shoots ASA and IBO so I am not tring to start anything I am just an archer that likes to get somthing out of what I work so hard to be good at (not great). I am no Tiger Woods but I would like to see our sport grow to the level of golf or some other individual or team sport that more people could make a living at it. So I have no gripe about the shooters that shoot because they love the sport I think that is the best. I have won my share of money to but I started this thread so I could get some other peoples ideas on how we could get more. Thats all, so how much money do you make shooting your long bow anyway?

Something wrong (in your eyes) with shooting a longbow? Your attempt at sarcasm seems to suggest so. Steve |
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
No Steve I have a couple long bows of my own one i really love my brother in law made it for me it shoots like a dream killed several deer with it to. one long bow one recurve.I dont like when I start a thread to get positive feed back and i get hammered about what I say I have nothing against any type of archery its my favorite thing in the world and the peaple that get involved with it 99% of them are great people.

OK Paul - tough to read intent in this medium sometimes. Take care

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
It would be nice to win an archery tournament and get a check equal to one that a professional golf player would get, but I do not think that it is going to happen.
If someones has and ambition to make more money through shooting archery tournaments, then simply place a side bet with a willing competitor who has the same ambition. If you can't get any takers then you are not talking enough smack. by pursuing a money making ambition as mentioned above: IBO would not have to be involved. Shoot fees would not have to increase. Clubs or IBO would not have take a smaller piece of the shoot revenue pie. Payout could be dictated by paticipants. (eg. winner take all) those who love the sport for other reasons can continue to do so. the amount you win or lose would be detemined by the amount you are willing to risk. I must say that the above suggestion is one that I personally do not encourage or discourage, and I do not know if it would even be legal. I guess what I am trying to say with respect to all, is that you cannot expect to win thousands of dollars with a $37 entry fee. |
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
Hi Milton,
Saw a picture of the buck Jason shot with your bow. Wish I could have made it to Missouri to hunt with you guys. Maybe next year. Are you going to make it to all of the Triple crown shoots this year? If so, maybe Jason and I could hook up with you and shoot sometime. Bill |
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
Paul,
I don't see what the problem is. If you are up for higher entry fees all you have to do is enter in the Semi-Pro or Pro class and you will be set. JMHO |
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
Bill,
I sent you an email. I will be hunting Turkey with Jason in a couple of weeks. :) |
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
BOS I am up for that. My first full year shooting in a long time I want to do well in MBO first. Then I will set my goals a little higher one step at a time. I guess I will be a little more cautious in what I ask for in this forum in the future you guys are tough.
Tip |
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
Go Pro, you want more, pay more. Don't hang out in the amateur classes where the guys who only want to improve their yardage estimation and shooting skills for hunting are. If you can't compete with the pros, then you don't deserve more money. If you're in it for the money pay up, don't expect the average guy to pay your ticket!!

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
;)Point well made!!! Sometimes the truth hurts:D
|
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
hunt2much, straight and to the point for sure, and you are right.....i look at 3-d as an expensive hobby, if i wanted more money, i would get a part time job or even a better paying job to support my habit....can you get disability for an archery addiction?????:D
|
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
:D That is a great idea, here in NY one might be able to get paid for disability:)
|
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
i have given this much thought, and the archery addiction idea has a little merit, i will call the disability office on monday and see if i can file........i might even get a parking pass so i dont have to walk so far to the walmart.........
on a serious note, anyone who feels they need more money needs to go ahead and turn pro now, at the earliest chance.....before bedford......here is my thought on this one, put your seatbelts on, lets just say the crooked fiber sight company donates $50,000.00 per shoot and wants a great return on that investment, who do you think will shoot for the loot? not the amatures, so go ahead and make the jump now, and get used to shooting for the big dollars.......when it filnally does happen, and i truly wish it would, you will be quite compfortatble shooting with the big dawgs....no wait, then there will be the argument that the ibo is keeping 49,500 of that money to pay for lear jet trips to the triple crown, and that ken is hunting the bears at snowshoe that tore up the targets, or maybe the ibo is chartering a fishing boat next year at pensacola, and the entire ibo staff is getting hummer H2 to ride around the ranges on........naw,,,,,,too farfetched. maybe they will continue doing what they are doing and work extremely hard to make our shooting experiences as good as they possibly can, minus the weather.......i cant believe i went there, ken is spending the money on the ibo weather radar diversion transducer. this new device will stop all inclement weather from traveling within 100 nautical miles of an ibo event.....and in the basement at kens house he is trying to develope a bug killer tolerent strain of no see ums and mosquitos for the entire ibo shoot schedule, not just erie. imagine, an imported swamp at nelsonville, complete with the little flying critters.......naw, too farfetched again, im convinced that ken, and the ibo staff are actually working for us to provide a place to shoot.... |
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
AMEN!
|
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
That weather thing is a work in progress! I'm gonna make millions!;)
It ain's H2's, they are the original hummers. I wanted the diesel/allison combination in mine. So of course all the directors and state reps had to have their choices. You guys are going to make me blush. :) Do make sure if and when you are shopping for a 4-wheeler you look hard and give strong consideration to a Suzuki. Thanks, ken12 |
RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
KEN, EXACTLY WHAT ARE YOU SAYING IN YOUR LAST SENTENCE? IF I MAY INFER, I THINK THAT WOULD BE JUST GREAT IF THAT HAPPENS, KEEP US POSTED. OH, I HAVE DECIDED NOT TO SHOOT AT BEDFORD OR ERIE THIS YEAR ----- NEW HOUSE, LARGE YARD, NEW FOUR WHEELER, TURKEY SEASON, AND A THOUSAND OTHER THINGS TO KEEP MY TIME OCCUPIED, I JUST CANT SEE IT (PLUS--MY SHOOTING SUCKS RIGHT NOW WITH NO PRACTICE), BUT HOPE EVERYONE HAS A BALL. I WILL MISS SEEING MY CAMPING BUDDIES, BUT I WILL SEE YOU IN NELSONVILLE, HELL, I MAY EVEN BUY LUNCH--THEN AGAIN MAYBE NOT.

RE: What do we need to do to get more money?
I saw Suzuki on the back of the score cards at Gem City this past weekend. Does that mean there are going to be a full time sponser?
