8.5 Binoculars (yes or no) (Ken)

If the IBO is going to allow 8.5 Binoculars when will the rule be amended for these? I have heard it was unofficially announced on this forum awhile back that 8.5's would be ok to use. Right now if someone is using 8.5s it would be illegal according to the IBO rules on this website. Just need some clarification or an update of the rules on this site. Thanks very much.

David, if you do a search on 8.5 you will see Ken's definative answer, as he has answered yes before.

Let's get rid of that rule and allow any power, like the ASA.
One of theses day's im going to forget and grab my (ASA) set and bring it to the IBO and get caught!!! That would suck. IMO

Bartman, that actually happened to a friend of mine at the Pa. IBO state shoot. He used to shoot both IBO and ASA and had 2 pair of swaroskis, 8 and 10X42. Got down there and had the wrong pair!! Ended up using a pair of $19 Wal-Mart specials that day!! Maybe they were the 7X 50 somethings? anyway, he was screwed for that day!

I hear everyone saying that Ken is telling them that 8.5 power is ok!! I havent seen this in the rules yet!! Some people say they are using the 3% margin of error rule which still doesnt add up to 8.5. I wish IBO would drop this 8 power limit all together. I am dying to use my (hubbles) 30x60's!!

Here is Ken's reply from last year

RE: IBO Binocular rule

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry I have not been able to respond to all this mis-information sooner! I've been gone and when I got back my computer no longer functioned with the old pass words.
As a point of reference, in many of the rules there is a margin of grace. 280-288, 4" will allow 3.75, etc.
In this instance the 8.5's are allowed.
I had an opportunity two years ago to have a demonstration of equipment that measures magnification. It was at the Springnationals in Fla. Pretty neat. They wanted to bring it to the World's to check equipment. Now that would make a line to stand in. But I suppose we could do random checks and all the finalists.
Suffice all this to say the tolerences held for magnification on many optics are not exceptionally close.

The company was there to preview an upscale line of optics they were bringing out. That was Pentax. Not one pair was 8.5x.
This past fall we were told that if we changed the rules by the logic of a particular company they would give a Diamond level sponsorship. The board did not consider it.
The same as when the rule was originally changed. Much of the info provided was by several optics makers. They agreed with the problem for our game. BUT, when the board made the change we DID lose a major sponsor. Other organisations did not make the change and kept the sponsor. That was their choice.
But the IBO board made a decision based upon the information that they had available to curtail a way to measure distance to a point that a significant advantage was gained by the person with the optics capable of this process.

How about getting rid of binocs all together? Why does that make you a better 3-D shooter?

You can't hit what you can't see !! There are so many different targets out there and the 10 ring is not always in the same spot, example feeding deer with head down and HD deer. If you are going to shoot for the 11 ring you have to know where it is . Some animals 10 rings are very different depending on which side of the animal you are shooting.
