Hunter Class Vanes
 

This is a question for the IBO Staff. I like to shoot AAE Speed Flyte vanes. I plan on shooting in the Money Hunter Class and it specifies that the vanes have to be 4 inches long. The Speed Flyte SF-40 is only 3.8 inches long. Can I shoot this vane or is it too short to be shot in this class? Thanks :)

Don't take this the wrong way but I think you answered your own question........;)

3.8" is not 4"
12.5" is not 12"
4.8grs /lb is not 5grs /lb.
etc.

There has to be cut-offs and measurements in restricted classes and they are held to exacting standards.......otherwise I guess they could just put in the rules, "make sure your vanes are as close to 4" as you can get them" .
These aren't approximates, they're requirements....They have to draw the line somewhere if for no other reason then to provide some sanity for rules enforcement.
If they let 3.8" vanes slide, then you know the guy who wants to shoot 3.7" is gonna cry, or is that entirely fair to the person who IS shooting 4" because the rules say so?
Is .2" an advantage or going to mean a hill of beans in the long run??? Doubtful , but it's a rule for that class.

Seems like a good question to me . After all, they do allow 8.5 power binoculars when it clearly states in rule #12Cthat 8 power is the max.

Matt is forgetting about 1 thing. The IBO does state that the vanes are 4", But, There is a variance in manufactures lengths of 4" vanes. YES, 3.8" vanes are allowed. I do not remember when this was last brought up and what the exact tollerance is but I do remember that 3.8" is ok.

Sorry I did not get back to ya'll sooner.
For vane restrictions (because vanes shrink when removed from the mold) we allow 3.75" net.
We allow 2 pounds for scale variations. We allow 5 grains for grain scale variation. 3% on chronographs.
We allow 8.5 binoculars.
Rules are rules, but we don't want to dq half the shooters. We all know what these rules are intended to do.

p.s. as I mentioned in the post above , we are re-writing the entire book to clean up,organize and clarify everything. That will take several weeks to complete.

So in other words AAE knows the 3.75" allowance and is making them JUST above that huh?;)
Makes sense, if IBO allows it why not give yourself an advantage over everyone elses 4" vanes.

Sorry for the assumptions and thanks for the clarifications, I assumed 4" meant 4".

I do not know about AAE. Originally I spoke with a vane maker that I have known for probably 20 years that explained the problem to me. It carries through all of the vane lengths that are molded. That is where the original agreement from the boardfor this tolerance came from.
But we all know the effects of rules on equipment. They will do all that can be done to just barely stay inside the rule. The rest of us just try and keep up.

I don't think I mentioned a variance there. The board has not established any varience there. I guess they don't shrink much when you cut them.;)

Ken , whats the chance of the Bohning Blazer vanes becoming legal for hunter class? A lot of people are hunting with them.

First I want ya"ll to know I am hunting with Blazers. That does not mean much in the real world, but I wanted to sort of preface my comment.
On first blush I would say that change would pretty much make it MBR.
One pin and screw in points with no limit would be the difference.
I really do not know what the board thinks about this issue. It didnot come up at the meeting. We have madeit a policy to do class/rule changes at the fall meeting in order to set the qualifier standards. There have already been over a dozen held for 06.
I would suppose that if there is enough input they will consider it. We will have to wait and see.
