WVa Turkey harvest
isn't it odd, that our harvest is back to 1991 levels, according to WV DNR. We've had a steady decline in kills over the past 4 years. Can't blame it all on weather....maybe starting the season sooner ? I remember hunting gobblers LEGALLY before the time change took effect. Anyone else remember that ? It appears as if the deer isn't the only species being ignored........................... just venting.

RE: WVa Turkey harvest
That's probably a good gauge of turkey numbers, but I've heard nothing but how OVERPOPULATED areas are with turkeys this year. Can't say that for my area, since there aren't many there. But other people are beginning to look at them as tearing up the woods and taking away food that deer need.

RE: WVa Turkey harvest
Doug knows my feelings on the turkey population and season. We're overrun with the edible buzzards, with no way of controlling the population. Some areas WITH a fall season, don't have a lot of birds. We (Braxton) have too many birds, and no fall season.
The season starts about 3-4 weeks too late...and the ENTIRE state should have a fall season. Just my opinion...But the decline in kills isn't representative of the number of birds on my farm. |
RE: WVa Turkey harvest
Pro line I live in Braxton also and you're right, there are way to many Turkeys. The DNR says that we hve to harvest 499 birds in the Spring to have a fall season. They bring season in so late theres no way to do it. We need to vote in some lawmakers that will change things in the DNR AND THE HUNTING SEASONS.

RE: WVa Turkey harvest
I live in Upshur Co. and the population is way TOOOOOO large. I agree, the season comes in about 3 weeks too late. Hard to get a shot, whenever they don't respond. I've seen several large flocks with strutting toms in almost every field along Rt. 33. I walked out of the house this morning and heard one gobbling his head off. 10 more days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck to everyone this season.

RE: WVa Turkey harvest
We generally don't have any problem killing them...we just hunt them totally different. Call and wait...call and wait...call and wait...
It's like freakin bow season. LOL They just don't answer us. |
RE: WVa Turkey harvest
I know i have seen more birds here in Hardy county in the last few years than i think i have ever seen. Seems like there are more of them then deer anymore.

Snow showers Sunday and Monday!?! Son-of-a...
How do you imagine the prospects will be for calling in turkeys in wet, cold conditions? Also Pro-Line, I sent you a PM about calling and waiting, but don't know if you got it. Do you move every so often or pretty much stay in the same place the whole time? |
RE: WVa Turkey harvest
Guy's, I'm from Delaware and will be in on May 6th for a hunt. I haven't heard anyone talk about Harrison County. Does anyone have any idea of the Turky activity in that area?

DE, I work in Harrison Co. and have see 6 birds in the fields along I-79 the last two mornings and over the past couple of weeks have seen birds almost everywhere here. Seeing a big 'ol tom strutting across a field is such a beautiful site. Good luck to you.

RE: WVa Turkey harvest
Roane county is polluted with Turkeys.....as usual the season came in to late for the best action. [&:] Seems to be the case in most of the state....hopefully the DNR will figure a better approach in the coming seasons.........but I am not going to hold my breath!
