N.Y. Outdoor News

Just got my second issue. Many good articles on the new hunting and fishing regulations being proposed. If you hunt in N.Y. and want the latest info, this is a good place to find it.

Yeah I second that....NY Outdoor News is excellent.

I am kinda biased though:D

Who'da thought that?

You think this issue is good, look for the coming issues, they will only get better.

Our very own Charlie P. was in the Feb 11 issue in the Sounding Board.

You can call 1-877-705-5303. 26 issues for $18.00, tons of good info and the last issue had a map of Piseco Lake where they are having a fishing tourney (hard water) this w/e. Great timing!

i agree ! best value out there for a Mag, and the info is great for us new yorkers! i like to read about exotic hunts as much as the next guy, but it's nice to look at a newspaper and not see articles on rams, texas bucks, ocellated turkeys, etc. just lots of good practical info.

I was surprized when i went to the store to get the april Turkey and Turkey Hunting that NY Outdoor News was right next to it.I am gonna read it today but it looks good from me just flipping through it. I haven't seen the New York Sportsman or New York Game and Fish for a while now. Are they still around?

Game and Fish is still around, but they just do not have the same "read" as NYON. Game and Fish's publish dates are way ahead, since they are apart of a large national publishing house. This keeps them from being able to be up to date as NYON is.

What part of NY?

I am sure Charlie P. won't be the last of the hunting.net NY members in NYON.

I'm a student of outdoor writing and was wondering what you like about the magazine. Does it inform you about public land. I get a few northeast based magazines and was wondering how you think this is a better magazine? I little feedback would be great! I'm doing a little research as to what the sportsman ( average man ) really want. I myself dislike the advertising, but it helps keep the magazines running. I do like a magazine that I can relate to or about places I've been. Any feedback would be helpful. Thank you.

You should study what advertising does more. It is not just about keeping the magazines running. People sometimes look for them to meet their needs or desires.

Where are you studying writing?

A good way to get in the habit of outdoor writing is to re-read what you write/type and make sure you use the correct rules of grammar. Saves you time, and embarassment later. Also, do not begin sentences back to back with the same word (I, I'm). Don't think I am being an A$$, because I make the same mistakes all the time. Just having someone else look over your work can make the difference. Also, stepping back for a few minutes, then returning, will allow you to spot errors.

Good outdoor writers are few and far between. A ton of writers are edited heavily. The ones who aren't are the ones who make the best of their fortune.

Thanks for the feedback!!! Yes, you are right about advertising. Count the pages of advertising in most issues. It's a very high ratio. Come on Viagra ads, please. These ads have nothing to do with outdoor sports.LOL Also, I'm a student. My spelling and grammar can be checked with the click of a button. I know the morals of outdoor writing, and the manner in which it is written. I'm looking at what the average joe sportsman is looking for. You know the guy who makes up 90% of the outdoorsmen.

Hey, if you don't want to take advice from an outdoor writer, then such is life. No skin off my back.
But if you are going to make a go at it, an attitude adjustment is in order. Don't rely on a computer to fix errors, you'll be humiliated when your article goes in print, or hits the desk of an editor.

And Viagara ads...think about it.....the average age of hunters in America is in the high 40's. That means a large portion of them are OVER 40, which Viagara provides a service to.

I especially like your quote in bold here. If you know this, why did you ask these questions?

The average sportsman idea is easy to theorize, but impossible to get a tangible answer on. No publication will 100% meet the demands of their base. That is simple logic. A good way to see what the average sportman wants is to look at any of the subscription based publications that have a solid base. D&DH, FFG, F&S, and others.... Remember like I said....It is not 100%.

And out of repsect...you should ask that privately. Plus it is a question....not a sentence...

The magazines you posted are good magazine. FFG is my favorite. I am going to look at some of the others and do an ad count per page.

WildWork, heres one for ya. If you dont already have it, grab this book. "On Writing Well" -by William Zinsser. Itll give you alot of goodies on usage, dos and donts, etc. I have a great gig with a trade mag, I do a column, its whatever I want it to be, and they give me full latitude. For the most part the readers know who I am, so I can write it as I say it, without following too many rules. Ok, I DO have to punctuate, but this is just a forum, so I "stylize"! Check out the book, though, youll love it if you really wanna learn to articulate in print. Anyone can talk, but to write you must learn to hold a persons interest and attention and...hey, WildWork, you still here???
