I plan to for the first time this summer. I've been reading up on it as much as I can and am putting a plan together for an August hunt.

Last season i had an encounter with a black and her two cubs. I would definetly take a shot if the oppertunity presented itself.

My first and last one was 362lbs(beginners luck) at 15 yards w/ a 44 mag. One shot through the lungs. I'm hooked for life. Go to Maine

1st time Hunter of Black Bear this year, With bow 1st thou, Doesnt start until Oct , Been reading & etc, But still need to find a Good area West Of Rt 17 to hunt, In NY & I plan On making a Bear skin rub for Wife & eating the meat, I hear its pretty good, We will see If my luck Holds up.....

Man, if you're planning on a rug start saving now. They cost more than a half body mount. I got a price for one in 99 and it was 850.00. As far as the meat, I got most of mine made into sausage but I've heard the roasts are pretty good in a slow cooker.

I hunt in NY, in the Catskills. I actually plan on doing something silmilar to what you are thinking. For bear I would look into the Slide Mountain Wilderness or the Bid Indian Wilderness. They both have plenty of land and good bear habitat. Hunting there isn't easy though. Lots of rugged terrain.
