WV camp

Well just got great news! Our WV camp might be changing owners:D My buddy just got a 229 acre lease for 10 years which runs right up to his Dads now 175 acre lease. Thing is that the he's looking get out of the leasing the camp we use now, and move shop to PA! My buddy and I are going to take it over plus add the 229 lease:D. The 229 lease has been hunted owned and hunted on by only one guy for the last ? years. He's got food plots and thick cover plots all over the property. We could never hunt his land until now. It's real sad but he's passed on the the great place in the sky and his wife is the one who's going to lease it to us. She's a wonderful woman:D So that's going to be a just over 400 acres for the next 10 years of prime turkey, deer and rabbit hunting! If all goes well I'll be calling my Dad and brother to get ready for good times and some awesome hunting trips. We're going to try to keep it small so that way everyone has a great opportunity enjoy the hunting. Man, I've been wanting this for a while now! to have our own camp! Somethings take a while to get and are well worth waiting for;)

I know I will be at least three family members and a good friend from here in NH. My buddy has two family members on a one of our good trout fishing comrades. So that's ten guys and two kids for 400 acres, is that too much? Anyone care to share how you run your camp or some ideas on rules of the camp? dues? etc.... Thanks

Yeah I know what you mean! We can't catch them all but lucky for us, my buddy lives only five to ten minutes from camp depending on which 4 wheeler you take over the ridge:D Plus he grew up there and knows a lot of what goes on back in the "hollers" as far as who's hunting;)

If you do set up a hunting club, be sure everyone agrees on CLEARLY DEFINED rules before the hunting begins. It wouldn't be nice to go there and find someone is bringing in nonmembers for hunts, or thinks they can have first crack at the stand you put up while they were at home, etc.

By the way, what county of WV?

MK, sounds like ten years of great hunting is in your future, congrats. Ten hunters on 400 acres is fine as long as all ten arn't hunting at the same time. You might get away with it if your all bow hunting but ten gun hunters can be a squeeze on that size property. If the terain is thick and hilly you may be OK?
I live in DE but hunt at least twice a year in harrison county, WV. What county is your camp in?

Whether or not it's too many hunters is all predicated on the amount of deer you might have on the property. Set up some guidelines like Doug says and do it primarily for QDM, nothing under a 4 pt , just does first week, whatever give some tolerance and discuss the rules and you should have a great camp. What county are you in......

Monongalia County(hope I spelled it right) and it has a lot of rolling hills, draws, ridges and hollows. Plenty of honysuckle patches and thickets for deer to hide. Only a few of us will be bowhunting and the rest with be in during the gun season. We've been talking about keeping some hollows closed to gun/bow and mixing it up each year. Maybe this will give the deer a place to hide with no pressure and keep them a live longer.
