sooooooooooooooo, if ive been hunting with my bow for 10 days, seeing a buck (big or otherwise), and i finally get a shot at him on the 11th day (which happens to fall on the first day of "antlerless only muzzleloader week") , i'm gonna put the bow down and say "oooh, you're lucky, keep walkin"???????

how about NO. i've just become an outlaw.

NY state... . taxes suck, hillary sucks, chuck schumer sucks. cops suck. ALL the politicians suck. liberals suck. Encon sucks. STATE JUST JUCKS.

I have been hearing this attitude a lot.
Don't like the proposal either. But I would not shoot that buck. If I did and had it mounted, everytime I looked at it I would know I poached it. Kind of like having a trophy from a shoot on the mantle that I cheated to win.
Might as well shoot it at night with a rifle. A trophy to me is one taken within the rules. Just my thoughts.

If I read this right bow hunters and MZ will share the woods for that week and it will be doe only.

What about safety concerns?

The Dec. nuts, there going to have us out there with our camo stuff, and the smoke pole guys walking around looking for stuff to pop.I think it's a accident looking for a place to happen! Charlie they also have problems with there bear season ideas. Rich

RE: NY changes to the Proposal

Its an assinine proposal for sure, but the camo argument is kinda irrelevant. If its a doe only week, the guy with the muzzleloader still needs to identify his target as being a doe rather than a buck, so safety shouldnt be the issue. The DEC really goofed on this one, and the COs in the field have to bear the brunt of it. Figures. One other thing...moose got his list of things that suck in NY going, but Id agree with some of it, especially Schumer and his girl Swillary. But Id not include cops on that list.

Bill, modern muzzleloder with a killing range of 200 yards and my butt in total camo is a safety concern for me.

RE: NY changes to the Proposal

I don't see this being much better. At least they are still allowing bow for that week. Why not just have the early ML antlerless week (it appears that the DEC is set on having one) the 1st week of Oct. (ML only) then start up with bow? Am I the only one that thinks this is a "fair" compromise? That gives the deer plenty of time to resume natural patterns before prime bow hunting sets in.

And why no extended ML season late???

RE: NY changes to the Proposal

I don't have a problem with it. From what I just read a few people aren't interested in extending early season archery at all.

Give the first week to the MZ then close it for a week then start the season as it has been for years.

I think they should extend the late season I would personally take advantage of it. Seen to many nice deer doe and buck killed in the late season to think it's a waste.

Charlie, Im afraid you might have missed my "tongue in cheek" sarcasm on that last post. The DEC are the ones who would have you believe that the doe only restrictions would prevent accidents, because IN THEORY you have to now identify bucks from does in that week. See? Im not for this season either.

Personally, I dont care for extending late seasons, because, as a taxidermist, I see too many bucks that shed antlers early that would then become a "doe" to the hunter at 50 plus yards. Im not really sure why the DEC wants to add this season for the muzzleloader crowd, which by the way, I am one of...

To me, start the bow season Oct 1st, run through November, then possibly start a one week muzzleloader for either sex the week before the gun starter. I dont know, I guess I just dont see the need to start the MZ hunt early. Most of us use them during the gun season anyway!

Charlie P,

There's nothing that says you can't wear some blaze orange during mz.

All that new addition about antler restrictions scare me.

That is the last thing we need. Yeah another PA.....

I shudder at the idea of trying to draw on a deer at 15yds with blaze orange.

I still don't like the concept of having a ML season in the middle of Oct. with archery on both sides, and during. I mean what is really their point of putting it in the middle. Oh we need the deer to calm down for the slug throwing fest!!! I can tell you what, hunting in the Northern tier it has become a SAFETY concern having both style hunters in the woods at the sametime. Unless you have your own private land to bowhunt. Enter onto Public lands during ML season, w/ bow in hand & full camo at your own risk! Thats exactly why I put my bow down and pickup my ML in the Northern zone wearing orange. Its wacked! Man what the heck are they thinking!!!! Put the darn thing on the beginning of archery or the end of archery. It'll reach the intended goals!!!!

RE: NY changes to the Proposal

I was reading up on the DEC sights about the seasons maybe i overlooked something. Will there still be northern/southern setup like the past? I live on the border of the zones and am able to hunt early and late muzzleloader in northern zone and late muzzleload the south allowing me 3 weeks of muzzleloader. With addition of this new muzzleloader season for southern does that mean i will now have 4 weeks of muzzleloader hunting?

RE: NY changes to the Proposal

Once the ML season opens the pattern of deer will change making it diffulcult to take one with a bow after the season closes.I don't have the luxury to hunt private property.I am guessing there will be many guys in the woods throwing sabots.

RE: NY changes to the Proposal

Just as an FYI...

Here in CT, landowner firearm opens on November 1st, basically the best hunting. Landowners with 10+ acres are allowed to use rifles, larger than .243.

Since I've been here, there have been under 10 hunting related accidents. Most have been treestand or heartattacks. I believe that there have been 3 shooting fatalities...one person was hunting on Sunday (which is illegal) and mistook a man and his chocolate lab for a deer, the other involved a prison warden firing at a DEC officer after hours (smells like fish eh?!), and the other involved two best friends---who loaded their weapons near their vehicle, with an "accidental" discharge blasting through the truck and killing a friend (more "fishy smell" with that one also).

I bow hunt during this time, as do many others, with little regard for "unsafe" conditions.

Neither the bowhunters or landowners are required to wear orange, and this period lasts for about 2.5 weeks. Also has a minimal effect on deer pattern, and I'm guessing that the number of muzzleloader hunters per square mile in NY will be less than the number of rifle-toting landowners per square mile here in CT...
