Ouestions about West Virginia
 

I live in centeral WV, Randolph co. I was born in 1951 and raised here and have hunted and fished since I was big enough to walk.
Same for my Dad,he is 82 and sharp as a tack he still hunts and killed a nice 9 point this past season with an 18" spread.

If anyone has any questions about hunting or fishing this area of the state, I will be glad to try and answer them for you,between dad and I we have over 100 year experience here and know the place pretty well.

We have hunted and fished for everything available here, so feel free to ask and I will try to answer.

How much land are you looking for?

Go to wvhome.com and go to the business listings under realestate, you can click onto nearly all of the local realters web sites and they all have current listings with pictures.
also try the elkins area chamber of commerce and the elkins intermountain
and the classified section
All can be found there/

My question is:

Where EXACTLY is you favorite spot to hunt and can you send me a detailed map along with the nessesary permission and make sure that your stands are in good order (I like to be comfortable). Also, I'll need your phone # in case I get something---I don't like to gut or drag animals myself. (big grin)

Corridor H already has the price of land around Elkins skyrocketing... I have a dear friend whos' from Montrose....and lets' not forget Pickens!!!!

Actually corridor H is not whats driving up the cost of land so much as out of state investers, and high timber prices.
I own and lease about 500 acres near Montrose,toward Teter creek lake.

Yes the land prices are high for here, but also very reasonable when compared to some other places.

I remember about 7 or 8 years ago when I was looking to buy land in WV, I could have gotten it for as little as $250 to $300 an acre in Barbour County. I'm sure those days are gone, but two main factors BESIDES going rates are how steep the property is and if it is timbered already (ie. no wood value). Of course, the biggest consideration would be how long the ride is, and Corridor H is surely going to trim that from Wardensville to Baker to Moorefield to Forman to Elkins...

Well.... maybe,if it is ever finished,I am 53 and doubt is I will ever see the day that I can drive it to moorefield.

I worked on the first section when it was going the Bowden route, it stopped at Bowden in 1976 and will never go any further.
I only live about 3 miles from where it now ends at Kerens and I will almost bet that as with Bowden in another 25-30 years that will still be dead ended there.

What you said about land prices is absoutely true, but housing has also gone the same path, houses all over Randolph and Barbour counties have doubled or trippled in the past 10 years.

I just bought 5 1/2 acres of level woodland with cabin and brooke trout stream running thru it and paid 3,000 per acre.
I think it was a good buy!
It is secluded with good timber and bordered by wesvaco which I have leased (140 acres)
The smaller the tract the more you will have to pay/acre.

Land here is starting now at 1000 per acre and the sky is the limit.

I also have the above land for sale as I have recently bought another tract that I like better,but the westvaco lease is not available as it also joins the recently purchased land.
I will sell it for 18,900 Just about what I have in it inclucing closing cost,taxes,etc.

Hey Hillbilly, where are you from.

My favorite hunting spot is wherever I happen to be hunting!
I don't use stands,I prefer to still hunt.
I don't like to gut and drag the critters either, I have a little trick,I take the young kids hunting and "teach" them how to properly field dress game and direct them as how to drag out the game !

Right now I am hunting cottontails in the river bottoms,snowshoes in the mountains and Grouse in the clear cuts.

Have also been setting up on coyotes, only one since Dec.
Always looking for a new hunting companion, I will even furnish you with your own kid (LOL).

I have been taking one of by buddies boys this year,his dad is an Iron worker and did not have much time off.
He is 13 and this year he beat the drawers off of me, he killed 5 deer,2 were bucks,a Turkey and a bear and a truck load of small game.
Last sat. we went rabbit hunting along with his dad.
Score, Me,missed 2, dad missed 1,killed 1
Boy, 3 for 3.
He has been hunting since he was big enough to walk and can probably out shoot and out hunt 98% of the adults.

But he is my,"student", I will let you hunt with another friends 14 year daughter, she only got 2 deer and a little old 225 pound bear this past season.

I live in Helena, MT now but originally from Moorefield, I think I sent you a pm a couple of weeks ago just to say howdy--I just like to keep up on things back in Mountaineer Country. I've got about 500 acres in Hardy Co. and I might get back there to turkey hunt this spring--if so I'll let you know. I wish I had access to some beagles out here--rabbits are thick on the rivers--the locals don't hunt 'em much--not even a season on them--open all year round. This was the first year I got to hunt here (1st year as a resident)--killed a nice antelope and Muley Buck. Saw some good elk too but didn't get a shot. Good luck-Good Hunting--hb
