RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
Bob I dont know about Roane at all but it was the top kill county
A preliminary count of deer registered at game checking stations across the state indicates that deer hunters in West Virginia harvested 64,547 bucks during the two-week buck season, which ran from November 22 through December 4, according to Ed Hamrick, Director of the Division of Natural Resources. The 2004 buck harvest was down 12 percent from the 2003 harvest of 73,128. The top ten counties were as follows: Roane (2,477), Hampshire (2,336), Mason (2,315), Jackson (2,082), Hardy (2,046), Preston (2,017), Ritchie (1983), Tyler (1963), Wetzel (1943), and Wood (1,855). RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
CD..as I know you hunt with a crossbow, they are illegal in WV, regardless of disability.[:@]
Just thought you'd want to know. |
RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
Cardeer- You know we all have different circumstances and needs. I'd move in a heartbeat to WV. But moving the family that distance and not having it go smooth can be devastating. Gorgeous country.

RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
Well that leaves that state out.

RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
Cardeer I went over to Doddridge County in Oct and built a hunting camp for a friend of mine it is a couple counties N of Roane West of Clarksburg, it is nice country and deer are everywhere. They are supposed to be getting some snow over there today, but then again so are you. If I didnt have my camp in Pa I would be in WV looking for land.

RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
RonM,
I am a Doddridge County native. Left when I graduated from high school and only go back to visit family. It's a darn shame there is not much work in WV. I hope to retire in five years, maybe I could convince the wife that a change would do us good. Steve F.in MD |

RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
Hey Guys, his camp is in Tyler county about a mile W of Doddridge line in a little place called Shirley WV. we spent 2 nights in Bridgeport, just E of Clarksburg, the drove out Rt 50 to Rt 23 to camp , he bought 44 acres over there. We put up a 16X32 cabin shell.

RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
RonM,
I used to do a lot of fishing in that area when I lived there. Is the restaurant at the "Jug" still there? Middle Island Creek was pretty good for Muskies back then. You guys are making me homesick. Rem100, You are right about property values. I wish I had bought some land when they were almost giving it away. I guess we could say that about just about everywhere though. Steve F.in MD |
RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
We stayed at a motel with an indoor pool and walked to "eat-N-Park" rest at the end of the drivewy , it had the best food, had an Angus Burger that was the greatest. We worked all day and came back to motel and now that's over because the cabin is finished, I loved it over there. I think but dont know for usre he gave abour $800 P/A for 44 A.It is on Davis Run Rd., If you go to Shirley, you've gone too far , he says. This is his 4th place in WV , he wanted isolation, he sure got it this time....

RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
Ron- was it right off the interstate sought of across from the Wal-Mart giant strip mall? Bridgeport/Clarksburg line. I got family lives about 1 mile down the road if thats the eat-n-park I'm thinking of. Land is still cheap in WV compared to a lot of other areas. We found several nice pieces down there reasonable. Just to far for hunting land from NH. Up here besides way less deer land is outrageous. Family bought a 2ac piece with a run down shack for 15k 5 yrs ago about 20 mi south of canadian border. Today after spending about 7k in supplies and a ton of sweat equity it was just valued at 95k for tax purposes. Unusable swamp land in the middle of nowwhere is going for 7 to 10k an acre. Let alone prime land.

RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
I agree regarding the income statement. However all things are relevant. Our incomes in NH may be higher but so are all other costs associated with landownership. Still no matter how you slice it WV is gorgeous country, friendly folks and tons more deer than up here.

RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
NHBuck, that's the place good food , nice area, they have some kind of bingo tournaments in that area . I would like to buy a place over there, a camp, fix it up and sell it, or buy vacant land and build a small camp on it and sell it. NH I have deer hunted in NH too, I was I think it was Berlin, alittle South of Plymouth , a friend has 300 Acres of rough , I mean rough mountain, he was a contractor in Plymouth, built a nice cabin on it, not many deer. Adear friend of mine live in Campton in amobile park just N of there. NH Buck send me your email...sometime...
|
RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
Ron- Yeah not many deer but they can be brutes in weight when you do find them. Berlin area is about an hour from the family camp up near Colebrook. Plymouth/ Campton area is nice it's about an hour and 15 North of me. Our total by all methods kill is around 10,000 each year. Total herd is estimated around 80,000. many folks up here go years without seeing a deer in season let alone get one. Thats why I have decided to concentrate out of state and plan to relocate. Our Lisc is expensive as well fro residents. I think rifle, muzzle and bow total to around $75.00. Break it down by deer seen let alone taken and it isn't worth it. Even harder to keep the little ones interested when they don't see them. Last year I hunted the old family farm in that area of WV and fell in love. I'd move in a heartbeat but step-daughter is 14 and not thrilled at the idea. 4 yo boy is dying to go to " Wes Ginny to deer and turkey hunt" Can't wait until he has another few years under his belt to take him for real versus strolls in the woods. sent you my e-mail.

RE: NEED Info on W.Virginia
NH I think my non-res license for rifle only was like $70. just about 4 or 5 years ago, it's about the cheapest price of any non-res I buy. WV was 113 the last time I bought one a few short years ago. NH is rugged terrain like WV. WV would be the biggest state in the country if it was flattened out.......
