Does anybody hunt Allegany County NY?
 

I am brand new to this message board. I have read many of the posts and can tell that the contributors to this board are very dedicated, knowledgeable and hardcore.
I have a question that I'm hoping some of you New York hunters can help me out with. I am currently considering buying a parcel of land in Alleganey County. It is about 100+/- acres that are 2/3 wooded and 1/3 open meadow. The property looks very appealing but I have no experience hunting in that region of New york state. Are there many (any?) mature bucks in this county? Is the county overhunted? I know from the stats that this county produces a high number of deer but also there is quite a large "army" of hunters who pound the woods there shooting many, many 1-1/2 year old bucks. Does anybody know of any QDM efforts being looked at for this region of NY (similar to what PA is doing)? Any replies would be helpful........Thanks

I hunt in Chumg Co NY, deer zone 8Y....this year we didnt hear many shots during the gun season. My friend hunted the farm during archery and saw many nice bucks and a few big ones

Allegany County is very good hunting country but also gets a lot of pressure. Steuben County to the east is probably the best county in NY for # of deer and big buck. Most of the bucks in Allegany are 1.5 year old. I love to bowhunt in Allegany but avoid it during gun. There are tons of hunting camps that are filled with city hunters from Rochester, Niagara Falls and Buffalo. Fights over property boundaries, posted land etc. etc. are commonplace. The state land gets hit hard during gun. 100 acres is a decent spread and if it borders an active farm that would be a good purchase. If it is surrounded by hunting camps I would be hesitant.

I live in allegany Co Wellsville NY & my first question is what part are you looking at.
I would need to Know this befor I could give a correct or fair answer.

The property is located in the town ofAndover.

If it is in WMU 9Y in Andover then buy it. No public land in that WMU, all farms and the hunting is great. Not far from state land in Town of Ward and West Almond also.

I've hunted Steuben County for over 40 years. Alleghany is the next one over. It's good for sure, but I'd second remarks by Newtown. Earlier season bowhunting is one thing. Gun season and the "orange army" may be another. If the price is right, I'd still jump on it.

Not to be personal but where in andover.

There is good hunting in that area 9y is heavy on doe permits the other units aren't as permit happy.

personally i've never hunted in andover but I do know people that have some very good hunting there
