PA - Gary Alt "Retires"!!! No Joke!!!

ALT RETIRES FROM GAME COMMISSION
Dr. Gary Alt, Pennsylvania Game Commission Deer Management Section Supervisor, submitted a letter announcing his retirement effective Dec. 31.

In acknowledging Dr. Alt's retirement, Game Commission Executive Director Vern Ross noted that the job of deer management section supervisor was not an easy task.

"Gary took on a difficult job trying to manage Pennsylvania's most controversial big game species," Ross said. "It was perhaps the most challenging job in the state, and there was no way anyone in his position could please everyone. Hunters see too few deer, while landowners, such as farmers and foresters, state there are too many deer.

"There are a lot of people out there who think that they could do this job. What they don't realize is that not many people could last more than a few months due to the competing viewpoints. Dr. Alt stood up to the challenge for more than five years."

Ross also noted that Dr. Alt did a tremendous job of trying to get the message out to Pennsylvanians about the need for balancing the deer with its habitat.

"For three years, Dr. Alt traveled across Pennsylvania to meet with hunters and nonhunters, as well as the news media, to explain the reasons and rationale behind the changes he was proposing for deer management," Ross said. "It was because of this effort, I believe, he was able to gain the support for antler restrictions, the concurrent rifle deer season and the Deer Management Assistance Program from hunters, legislators, landowners and other wildlife enthusiasts."

The deer management plan is in place. His work is done. Don't look for anything drastic to change.

Send Mr. Alt to Ohio to get some of these rednecks over here to start passing up young bucks.[8D]

GOOD GOD can this be true??? If it is I know why I've been saving that bottle of JD .
Sadly though like TinPa said don't expect much to change! He put it in place and now that things are completely f'up it will take awhile to overcome them. Guess we'll just need to wait an see now.

IF this is true, My work on Alt is done, I feel like a success!

Yeah, I agree. The DNCR/Audobon/PGC Commissioners have gotten a big foot-hold in the say about deer hunting in this state.

Well, this could be a good thing, or it could be much worse! We could get someone in that will take the plan that Alt set-up and modify it to accomadate what everyone wants, or we could get someone who will either forget about the plan and get us back to where we were 6 years ago or someone who wants even more deer killed off!

I will admit that this past week I went spotting and saw very few deer. In about 45 minutes of spotting, I saw a total of 8 deer! 5 doe and 3 bucks! Granted, the deer are still messed up from rifle season, but that is much less than I have ever seen at this time of the year. The bad thing is that 2 bucks and 3 doe were in a golden rod field in my "honey hole" property! The other three were spread out through the rest of the normal route!

I think that we were on the right track, but this rifle season seemed to have been truly hard on the deer herd around here! The property's that I have permission to hunt are at great levels with a good amount of deer but not too many, but it seems as though the rest of the areas around here are very low!

how do you express GLOATING on a message board?
BM said it though whom knows what the next "expert biologist" will do? Nobody, but I seriously doubt that much is likely to change for the next few years. The PGC will appoint a figure head that they can manipulate to do as they wish. And their wishes are to keep the farmers/timber companies happy. Doubt this just read Vern Ross's comments again as to Alt's retirement.

You hunt your state, and we will hunt ours.
No one says you have to come here to hunt.
We like our traditions and don't care what you think of them.

Gary Alt is gone, true fact, and YEA.
But the program is still there, and it's still no good.
The damage is done and will take years just to get back to where we just see a deer in some areas. And thats if they stop the doe slaughter NOW, and it ain't going to happen.

Yea Gary is gone but the problem is with the amount of doe tags being given out on some of the PUBLIC LANDS. That is what has to change to save the deer herd in some of those lands.

RE: PA - Gary Alt "Retires"!!! No Joke!!!

All of these doe tags don't seem to be a problem to all of the pa'ns who are filling them.

you talk about anialating spikes as if its a bad thing, How many trees does that Spike buck eat a year, plus how many more in the next 3 years does it shread to death? doesn't really seem like our forest biologist and deer management think of that. as far as im concerned going to Texas and shooting a Huge Buck is no accomplishment, when that is really all they have running around, but when you are able to harvest a big buck in an area that has very few large bucks, then you have done something that deserves a reconition. unless you shot it on the first couple days of rifle, where no skill other than being able to shoot. is needed. its just a matter of being in the right place at the right time when someone else messed up and pushed him up to you.
and for you private landers, with you heated windowed treestands, why don't you just go to one of those pet, pay and shoot farms? its not much different.

Exactly my thoughts,Bro !!.... now can you keep your Northern friends out of MY home state during deer season? Pa hunters that I've seen here, leave a lot to be desired....

I like what he did. Yes I am a landowner in Pa and hunt there so don't chime in about my being a flat lander. I pay my taxes in Pa. I love the horn restrictions.

I do think the doe population is being to aggressively harvested. My Camp, and those who hunt from it, have bought our doe tags for the last 2 years and they sit here unfilled, purposely! You could easily do the same.

Keep it up Pa.... and Dr. Alt enjoy your returement you earned it!

chickory 12-21-2004 01:13 PM

RE: PA - Gary Alt "Retires"!!! No Joke!!!

Yes, I could but it would be dumb.

I and the members of camp can pass on does, and the guys in the next camp will harvest them.

4 guys from New Jersey can drive up park and harvest twice as many as me.

WHY? Because thanks to Gary we have 1.4 million doe tags floating around in huge WMU's which mean more doe CAN be taken. A few conscientious hunters sitting on a few tags do nothing other can keep thier freezers empty.

The does still get taken.

Its too funny that your not able to figure that out on your own.

heres a little lesson deer mgmt in Pa. throughout the ages deer managers have had one tool to manage deer and that tool only does 3 things. It increases the herd, it keeps it stable, or it decreases the herd. And you know what that tool is??? C'mon guess. ? You can say it. Here I'll help you.

DOE TAG ALLOCATIONS......

You can sit in you camp and not take any deer, but it only hurts you.
They will be harvested anyway because there is a saturation of tags.
Amazing some are too dense to put the accountability where it belongs which is with the PGC managers who allot the tags.

If you REALLY thought hunters regulate themselves then we would have no need for AR in Pa.

If you really believe hunters are accountable just make AR voluntary and see how well you do...:D

Let me make it easy for you:

Say they sell 200,000 tags and only me and my group don't fill them. They will only kill 199,995 and thus be short of thier goal.

I can't believe someone with your intellect didn't comprehend my statement.

And come on if you'd put that .22 away at night, we'd have enough doe to fill our tags.

my God! with logic like that we have filled 1.4 million doe tags in Pa and have the highest deer success rate in the world.
just another example of why Alt was able to fool some!

But there aren't 200,000 tags :D There were 1,040,000 tags and if a few gullible saps don't fill thier tags the PGC will still hit thier goal of 250,000 to 350,000 does taken (whatever number they say will reduce the OW by x %)

Gary Alt had to dupe some people to sell his herd reduction plan in pa, but some were just to dim to know any better. ;)
