I love it,I always have to laugh at this. Yes maybe a little more movement when it is real cold on the way to their food source. But not just think .What do you think the deer in Mexico or South Texas do???????? They would never move if they are waiting for cold weather.

I tend to think the weather regarding temperature does play some role in deer movement. Depending on location. Northern Deer in the late fall early winter months have their winter coat on and tend to move less when the temp gets above 55 degrees. This is due to their inability to perspire over a large area and reduce their body temperature. They do not reduce heat through exhalation either. Southern deer probably do not develop as dense of a winter coat. Deer are incredibly capable of adapting to the exsisting elements. Do they still move, absolutely however it is not their normal amount or typical pattern. This has been documented in several studies including ones by Alshimer and Bernier as noted in their books.

where ya from , cardeer? because ive been doing this for 17 years and thats the way it is in my small neck of the woods. warm weather = minimal deer moving at dawn and dusk, bitter cold = deer moving ALL DAY to feed and keep fuel in thier systems.

i've shot em when it was 70 to -17, for sure , but i'll take a cold nasty day over a warm bluebird day anytime!

From Pa. but lived and hunted in 6 states. I do believe deer move some more when they are cold and need food for heat. Plus when it is cold in huntin season hunters move around more keeping the deer moving. But Just because the weather gets cold people think it is a magic formula.I probably killed 80% of my 183 deer in the early warmer part of the season. But thats just me. some reason why probably is I hunt edges just yards from the bedding areas in the burbs. And when it is above 45 degees I sit 12 hours a day. I think the idea that cold weather triggers the rut is really off the wall.If it was 80 degrees when the biological clock rings in the bucks ear it starts, not the weather man. Just my thoughts and experiences

Here in Western NY this warm weather just totally suppressed the rut activity , the week prior was outstanding, cold temps the bucks were moving all day, everything seems limited to the last 1/2 hour of light and morning for me have produced zero. Gotta believe there moving only at night. Am I the only one experiencing this type of movement? I've all but missed two days of hunting all season due to rain, every morning and every evening I'm out there, put in well over 200hrs on stand. 8 hours a day 4 in the morning and 4 in the evening. It's stressful putting all that time and not seeing a shooter buck, just little scrubies, I know the big boys are there, got them on trail cams, at all time of the day. Hope your season was better than mine.

Please excuse some of my comments in the above thread, I did shot a 130 class buck in the early season, just hoped I would see more than I did, I know a 130 in NY is great and am greatful for it, but just to even see them is very exciting, basically trying to get my dad a good buck, and can't, and just venting. Thanks for lending some ears.

I think the cold weather effects movement during the day, your right when it's the rut it's the rut , quite simply i don't think deer prefer to move in warmer weather, which in turn reduces the visibility of the rut during shooting hours.
