We have a farm in Van Etten which is about 20 min. away. We get a couple each year mostly smaller bucks but there have been a few bigger ones. I would say it is decent hunting .

I hunted Broome County fro a couple of years near the Lisle area. Pretty good hunting but it gets hit fairly hard from the locals and the deer are just now recovering from several severe winters a few years ago. Shotgun only keeps it interesting but you are used to that. Some of the best deer hunting is found West of Binghamton so you will probably have a great time if the farm has not been hammered over the past.

Guys, I just found out the property we are going to hunt on is in the town of WAVERLY. Not sure where WAVERLY is to ELMIRA, so if anyone has hunted the WAVERLY area hows the hunting for deer there, and does the area hold good size bucks?

I've lived in the town of Waverly for 38 years.I've been hunting for 35.The populatioin is around 3000 people. There are some nice areas to hunt outside of Waverly but 80% of the land is posted.
A 10 point buck is a good buck for our area.We have had 2 hard winters in a row and this is the 2nd year that the acorn crop is way down. Hope this helps you.Good Luck |

Ive hunted that around that area, for the last 4 years, as a non res from Pa. In my experiances most of the state forest aren't worth hunting, ive always seen very few deer. if any, and getting permission is very tough. i got permission from a couple of Amish farms, but they have a tendancy to wipe out most of the herd year round. Believe me you will get tired of seeing POSTED signs. heck alot of the property owner have the signs right on their front porch. I got a tag for the 8r section this year because of the 100% would get one, boy was that a mistake, There isn't any land in that zone that i could find that wasn't posted and out of the 15 places i stopped, i was shot down on all of them. If you dont have any luck in elmira, Meads Creek state forest, which is about 30 mins north has some pretty good land bording private land,

It's too bad that you weren't able to acquire permission in 8R. I live and hunt in 8R (Prattsburgh/ Pulteney area) and its some pretty top notch deer hunting as far as deer hunting in NY is concerned...lots of deer and in certain places, lots of nice racked bucks. I've seen / videoed some really impressive bucks in 8R over the past couple of summers. Everyone around here deer hunts or has family or friends that deer hunt, so I can imagine that it would be tough to acquire land to hunt. There's definately alot of hunting pressure in this part of Region 8. I'm hoping to get a couple of bonus tags for 8P or 8R when they are released on Nov. 1. Check it out on Nov. 1, maybe you can get tags for another area. Good luck.
