Possible Pa state record buck pics (shot last night)

Here is a pic of a buck that was shot last night in Lancaster county in Rothsville. It has 15 points and could possibly be a new state record. What do ya think?:D Too bad we have AR in place or else someone could have shot him 3 years ago when he was a 3" spike.:D:D:D

RE: Possible Pa state record buck pics (shot last night)

he's a nice one. But every year in Pa we have had a handfull of nice ones. Two years ago on Peters Mt in Dauphin county one was shot a little smaller than this one.

I think its funny though that you attribute it to AR, this buck could have been shot any one of the last 3 years. Junior hunters and military can take any buck, and last year he could have been shot, but like any other season for the last many decades he managed to get by for a few seasons. Thats nothing new.

I think he is great, but his size has little to do with AR. If you looked at it that way, he might of been shot in the 2002 zest for doe. When we harvested more does ,we harvested more button bucks too, could've been whacked then too. But luck and hunting pressure had more to do with it than AR/HR.

Any idea which state game lands he came from?? :D

I am happy with AR. I don't think AR produced this buck though because this buck is probably 5.5 years old. We will see more big bucks like this because of AR though. I know....JMO.

Great buck. He's not the product of AR, but AR will contribute to more like him, as livbucks stated. I say "will" because when you let small bucks walk, they are able to get bigger, and with that age comes wisdom that will further let the buck get older and bigger. Hence, more trophies walking around out there...

What a buck!!!

It will be interesting to learn what his age is. He could well be a product of AR if he is found to be 3.5 years old. Yes, it is possible for 3.5 bucks to look like that! It is amazing that some folks can still rail about AR not working in the face of harvests like this one that, while rare today, were infinitely more rare before AR.

I still cant believe ANY hunter no matter how selfish can resent the fact that kids and our servicemen get a little break that doesnt hurt statistically in the big picture. Shame on you, Chicory[:'(]

I guess or bean counter will chime in next with all the "facts and figures" to prove that this was simply an abberation in spite of all the harm Gary Alt has done[:'(]

That's a freaking huge buck. Hopefully, the AR in NJ pay off. ;) I had to let a tall dark 4 pointer go Monday morning.

Awesome buck, amazing buck, once in a lifetime for me......I personnaly cringe when I see pictures in the garage on the pavement though......imagine how much better the deer would look if it had a backdrop of autumn leaves??? Just my opinion!

RE: Possible Pa state record buck pics (shot last night)

I agree. Pavement and pickup beds dont belong in deer photos. Field photos are so much better! Preferably before the animal is field dressed!

RE: Possible Pa state record buck pics (shot last night)

Horn wise he could be 3.5. The reason I say 5.5 is the shape of his snout and the body mass. The rolls on his neck and body scream mature to me, and look at his legs and hooves. He is one big hog. I think the Hanson buck was supposedly 3.5, so if we get a bunch living that long we will see the genetic potential that we have around. Alot of factors produce bucks like this but if they all get wacked as babies the world will never know what could be.

Anyone remember the buck named "Heartattack" from the Realtree videos? Man this buck reminds me of him.

The photo on my computer at work was really dark. Now that I see it better I believe you are probably close on the age livbucks.

Anyone want to guess the score? I put him in the mid 180's gross and maybe low 170's
net.

An awesome buck, no matter what.

Sure am glad the PGC got some sense and made more like him a possibility!:D

Yes, but we could be wrong and the facts could prove we are wrong.:D

Real nice buck!!!! Ya done did good!!!! And it doesn't matter where you take the pitcher-----a buck like that one doesn't come around very often and the photo looks great where ever it's taken. You're little girl looks like she's wondering just what all the excitement is about.....:) How about an estimate of how high up in the tree(if you were in a tree stand) you were to get out of the whiffer of that trophy. Thanks for the photo and good luck the rest of the season!!!!

It was common knowledge that this bad boy was around Rothsville. Although I never saw him, several of my friends did. One of them almost wrecked his car when he saw him.

The guy in the pic farms his father-in-law's farm (Zimmerman), below Keller's mountains. Nera perfect deer habitat.

Remember , you ask for it.

I guess or bean counter will chime in next with all the "facts and figures" to prove that this was simply an abberation in spite of all the harm Gary Alt has done
Prior to AR there were always a few monster buck harvested every year. But, if that buck was in fact the product of AR ,here is the price the other hunters of PA paid in order for that one hunter could harvest a trophy. In 2002 the buck harvest was reduced by 38K due to AR and in 2003 it was reduced by 61K which is a grand total of 99K buck that weren't harvested in order that one hunter could harvest that trophy.

The fact is that in 2003 AR only increased the number of 8+ pt. buck harvested by 4,100. That is a lousey return for preventing 38K hunters from harvesting a buck in 2002. Furthermore, it prevented hunters from reducing the herd by 5%/yr. as Alt claimed was necessary. So in order to satisfy a few trophy hunters 99K other hunters paid the price and the herd hasn't been decreased by even 1% since Alt was appointed and in fact it has increased ,at least according to the PGC.

Actually this buck is the product of AR. Not Alt imposed AR, but AR practiced by this hunters and the select few that have permission to hunt his and surrounding farms. These guys are very picky and will not shoot just any deer.

I did not hear this first hand from the hunter in the pic, but a friend told me he heard he actually passed up a nice 8 point about 15 minutes before this bruiser appeared.

RE: Possible Pa state record buck pics (shot last night)

Weikert, he didn't pass on the 8 point it was chased off shortly after he got site of it by this brute coming through the cornfield.

That's a heck of a buck. Don't know if it will make state record. The record is a 21-point that scored 203 inches. Can someone get me in touch with the guy who shot it? I work for the local newspaper and I'd love to hear his story on this brute.

bearklr 10-12-2004 02:07 PM

RE: Possible Pa state record buck pics (shot last night)

buckman519, the state record taken with a bow is not 203. You are reffering to the one taken with a rifle in Erie. If this deer scores 175 typical he would take the state archery record. If it's scored NT it will have to score higher but it's still not above 200. What newspaper do you work for, I live in the area and had this pic sent to me the day after it was shot so I may be able to e-mail the guy who sent it to me and see if I can get you in contact with the hunter.

RE: Possible Pa state record buck pics (shot last night)

bearklr....the state record for a typical buck shot with a bow and arrow is 174....the state record nontypical buck shot with a bow and arrow is 203....it was a 21 pointer shot in Lehigh County in 1988 by Craig Krisher...go to the Game Commission's Web site and go to the state records to check it out for yourself...

man this deer is definately 4 years old or more. he is not a product of the PGC's new regs, but i like the way it is being handled (AR), we will see a heck of a lot more of these quality bucks turn up in PA now that the new regs are in place. my wife emailed me this from work the day after it was shot. i think he's a keeper!!!!

I am unsure whether or not some of you folks saw it but one of the local periodicals, the PA Outdoor News, had a small article about the buck in the latest edition. In the article Huntingnet.com was mentioned as one of the sites where a discussion of the buck and pictures had surfaced.

I wonder if any new info has surfaced since the story originally broke. Is the guy going to have it measured? What is he planning on doing with it?

I can't see the picture. Can someone help.

Also - what about Fritz Janosky's 186" typical that was shot in Bradford County in the 1940s?

Try this link.

If you are a PA hunter check out this MB. It is the best MB for PA hunters and has lot's of info you won't get from the PGC or any other MB.

RE: Possible Pa state record buck pics (shot last night)

Would they score that as a typical with deductions or go for a non-typical? I think it would be much more impressive as a typical. I don't know if it would break the record with deductions. That's why I don't like the scoring system. That's a monster.

pabowhntr, I saw that same article with a pic and some of the quotes I made regarding the deer. I posted it the morning after it was shot here on huntingnet and was contacted via e-mail by a reporter. It's good to see the websites name getting out like that throughout Pa. It's funny how fast things spread on the internet, I post a pic 12 hours after the deer is taken and a few days later it's all over 4 different sites :D:D
