pa, not many
Although last season we knew that deer sightings were Waaaay down, I am still surprised how few deer are being seen this summer. (I thought there would be a few less). They made it sound as though the extra doe harvested had no effect, even saying the deer herd went from 1.3 million to 1.6? But they must be bending numbers again. I took a trip west to a friends camp and he said his sightings are off by at least half, a drive north 100 miles on rt81 and we did not see a dead deer anywhere. I asked while up north if they were seeing many and they said it was about normal, they said that when we left the park and went home we would pass an old strip mine and we would probably see 10 deer - well we went by and stopped and got the spot light out and there were no deer. The guy said "now that you mention it, we have not been seeing many..."
On the farm we hunt the owners trailcam has not gone through its first roll of film yet after 6 weeks in 3 baited locations? And all the sportswriters in PA along with Gary Alt seem to be quiet as church mice. Gary was supposed to do anther tour of the country side to give his patented roadside show, but he did not do the tour. Granted over the summer the writers switch to fishing, but in August they usually grease the skids on the upcoming bow season, yet they have been gravely quiet? Seems to me that many parts of PA are going to be in for a quiet bow and rifle season again this year despite all the sermons on "better hunting" due to herd reductions. |

Here is what we have to look forward to.
I am going to post the data that shows the deer harvests per square mile for each of the WMU in descending order from the WMU that harvested the most antlerless deer per square mile to the WMU where the fewest antlerless deer were harvested per square mile. RE: pa, not many
That's pretty interesting.
So if only 4 bucks were harvested per square mile in my zone, and I was one of them, then only 3 other bucks of 30 some different ones I saw in a 1 square mile area were killed, I should be seeing a boat load of bucks this year, unless there are a lot of people poaching. |
RE: pa, not many
rybo:
"So if only 4 bucks were harvested per square mile in my zone" and "30 some different ones I saw in a 1 square mile area" This is strange because, by your estimates, WMU 2E, which you hunt, would have a greater buck density than the deer pen at the local petting zoo. And further, if this is true, why does 2E have the 2nd lowest amount of doe tags available? It would seem your observations do not jive with the PGC's. |
RE: pa, not many
The total buck harvest in each WMU is divided by the total land mass in that WMU to get the avg. number of buck harvested PSM. Since the total land mass includes fields and other non-forest habitat, the actual buck harvest in the forested areas will be much higher than the average harvest rate.

RE: pa, not many
I love reading these Gary Alt conspiracy theory threads. I think your deer are being abducted by aliens, who are working with Gary Alt on a secret project to create super strain of buck that will be re-introduced to PA. You guys just need to be patient and wait for Gary and the aliens to finish. Antler restrictions are just a diversional tactic so the real truth isnt discovered. ;):D

RE: pa, not many
I've heard that they are clandestinely importing abbagoochies in from West, by God, Virginia since the coyote stocking program has not had the desired results in decimating the deer herd.;)

RE: pa, not many
You are good at taking cheap shots and being a wise guy , but you can't support your position with PGC official stats like I do.
Alt's HR plan has been a miserable failure in most areas , so we may be saved from Alt's incompetence by the limited access provided by private property. However the hunters in the NC counties will continue to suffer due to Alt's mismanagement. |
RE: pa, not many
The area around here is loaded with deer on private property. The biggest problem is finding anyone that will let you hunt. Early in the mornings 4 am I see hundreds of deer in a little ride around the neighborhood. Just think how many you dont ever see. There is a stretch of road where every week deer are hit. Then go 4 miles either direction to Gamelands 52 or 51 and it is a ghost woods. luicky if you see 4 in a 100 acre hay field.
