Ironmine,

You are 100% correct. NJF&W told Denville right from the start to destroy the bear.

ironmine,

The statement you made regarding no hospital for an adult bear, might not be 100 percent correct.

There are ways they can be treated if one desires to do so. There are Wildlife Refuge centers in NJ, like Wodford Cedar Run in Medford, NJ, that can treat wild animals. The bear could have been tranquilized, than transported to a rehabilitation center for treatment. NJF&G probably decided they easiest way to take care of this situation is to put the bear out of it's misry, versus treating it. Less costly too since these centers usually do not transport the animal.

I had a deer run into my sons soccer net once, and the PA Game Warden came out, tranquilized the deer, pulled it out of the net, and placed it into the woods behind my house. The deer was fine, and later took off when I got home after work.

If that was PA, it might have been rescued by a Game Warden and taken to a center for treatment.

From the injuries that were described by the Denville police the Division biologists concluded the injuries to be too severe for treatment. They advised the bear should be put down.

In any case, we have too many bears in this state and I would object to my license fees going towards rehabilitating a single bear when they could go towards preserving habitat for the rest of the bears.

police are on the scene - have guns - are authorize to dispatch - Why would they call the game commision? Maybe I missed something?

jbc,

Wildlife rehabilitation centers receive all funding from private sources or people and do not work for the game commission. They will take in whatever animal you bring them and it costs you nothing.

Lived in NJ for the first 18 years of my life and still frequent the place to visit my parents and to hunt and fish. In short, this does not suprise me as the state is one of the most bass ackward in the union and a beautiful exemplification of political clout and apathy at it's best. [:@];) TGK

Over 1400 bear complaints last year, 58 house entries, 3 maulings and one child killed by bears in NJ last year. You can thank the US Humane society for the fact that most of your money in the Dept of Fish and Game is spent managing this problem. If NJ had a regular bear seaon these issues would be less of a problem. In the end it is the anti hunters who are responsible for these issues. Seems to me nobody wants thier name in the paper for shooting a bear, even if it was injured. It is a political problem, not a game manegment issue.
