PA Trout Opener?

How many of you PA guys will be headed out this weekend for our first few days of trout season? Where will all of you be going? My family always head up to Promised Land State Park for the first day. We rent a few of the state cabins and make a thoroughly enjoyable weekend of it.

PAB,

I would love to go, but I'm more of a Bass, Pickerl, Bullhead, or lake fisherman. Do you use flys or something yellow, like corn or the power bait? When I was a kid I use to go Trout fishing in the White River in Vermont, using corn and bobbers.

Is there a river near in the Promised Land that you go out of or do you goto the lake?

Tom

I have to sit the opener out this year. My daughter has a soceer game and guess who the coach is. This will be the first opener I missed in about 15 years. Creeks may be too high anyway.

I will be out. The waters should be at a semi-fishable level buy then. Its a good time to get out and laugh with friends and the less experienced people have a good chance to catch some fish.

There is an upper lake and a lower lake along with a small stream that runs between them. I fish the stream first thing in the morning and then head out in the canoe on the lower lake in the afternoon/evening.

I flyfished extensively at one point in my life but do not get out as much as I once did. Now I pretty much just spinner or bait fish.

Taking my Scout troop to the camp in Tionesta. Imagine the look on the fishermens faces when we roll up to a stream and 20+ kids and 10 or so Dads storm the stream.
At least the weather looks good for the weekend:D

I'll be scouting for whitetail or fishing a very small stream with very limited pressure. I hate the trout opener....too much pushing and shoving for their share of the put and take![:@] There's nothing quite like hooking a fish and suddenly having 10 lines tossed tight into the same hole before you even get your fish out of the water.....I hate opening day of trout season! I'll fish later in the year when nobody seems to want to fish anymore.

Jason N, maybe we can get together for a day of fishing this spring , im planning on headed up to my camp in Mckean Co. for a weekend in spring gobbler season. Where do u usually go trout fishing up there , i usually hit the S branch of the kinzua creek , due to it being 200 yards form my camp , and then ill usually hit the lure only access on the main branch for some big brookies. let me know whats goin on .

Have fun all. I bet it will rain. I don't ever remember a year that it didn't rain on the opener, at least for the last 8 years or so.

My church has a pancake breakfast every year. Great pancakes, the best pork sausage I have ever had, and pure maple syrup. And then about 10 different homemade pies to finish off with.

Isn't the opening day just beautiful. :) Most of the guys I know don't even head out until 3 in th afternoon. :)

Though the rain issue has been pretty consistant I think they are calling for sunny and temps in the low 70's....though rain in the late afternoon/overnight into Sunday.

DL, I usually don't venture over to McKean Co. too often, but I've been wanting to fish Kinzua Creek and haven't yet. I've wet a line a time or two in Sugar Run though. PM me or send an email when you're in the area....we'll hook up and get some fishing in.

Love to fish but I have never been to thrilled with the opening day of trout. It seems to bring out the best of the worst in some fisherman. Many discourteous guys trying to crowd you out and catch that 8" trophy before you do. Thay do not care if they are sitting in your back pocket and casting over your shoulder. JMHO.

Sincerly,

Fair warning guys! Somewhere in Forest county at 8 AM 25 or so boy scouts will swoop down on a local stream with every intention of catching a trout. A lot of em only get to fish when someone other than a parent takes em. Beaver Run, the Branch and Salmon Creekl are on the most likely to mobbed list.

I will be spending the day rebuilding reels, helping kids empty water out of their boots, removing hooks from various objects they were not intended to impale, counting and recounting heads etc. T top off the day we'll go back to camp and try to choke down some trout cremated on an open fire.

Can't think or a better way to spend the opener:)

Well, I don't think I'll be fishing the Branch, Salmon or Beaver Run, but it could happen. If I see a 'herd' of youngin's I'll look for the guy with the "Hook Removal Station" on his back and introduce myself! Have fun with those troops and good luck on those Brookies!:D

I have pretty much become a die hard fly fisherman. I hate the opening day of trout season in PA, to many people, to crazy. With that said I grew up in PA and havnt missed an opening day of trout in 20 years, being only 25 years old thats alot of years for me. Even though I hate it, I cant see breaking the streak now, it will be the one time of year to break out the the power bait and night crawlers and get back to my roots. And even know it will be a mad house out there i'm sure I will will get excited at 7:59 anticipating that first cast. We PA boys take our trout pretty seriously, 2 years ago a guy pulled a gun on my buddy over a fishing spot on opening day!!! Hopefully I will be able to stick a couple of those stockies and get home unscathed.........

Well, it's 7:46 AM on Saturday, and I'm sitting in front of my computer at work. I just gave a wakeup call to all my (hungover) buddies that were campin out last night by the stream. Man I wish I could be there! Then again. I'm the one w/out a headache this morning! :D:D:D:D

Caught 24 rainbows today at twin lakes in westmoreland county on Joe's Flies, the best trout lure there is!!! i then headed to the stream at about 630 and managed to choke one in on some powerbait... biggest of the day was a 17 and 1/2 inch hookjaw rainbow

How did you all fair on the opener???

RE: PA Trout Opener?

Today was the worst opener I have ever seen in Indiana County! I saw a total of 4 trout pulled out of the 2 streams that I fished today. About 7 hours of fishing, and I didn't even catch one!

I went to Brush Creek in the morning and it was still a little high, but the trout just weren't there! I saw one Amish guy pull out a little brookie, then some kid pulled out 2 brookies in the "deep hole" which is normally packed with trout, and then I saw one guy walking up to his truck with one trout. Everyone I talked to there hadn't even got hits.

Went to Little Mahonning in the mid-day and it was another waist. The water was still high and pretty murky! Not a single person there had any trout. I talked to about 20 guys who had been there all morning and they said that they saw about 5 trout pulled out of the "deep hole" there, and I talked to the owner of the property who said that when the Fish Commission stocked it, they put 21 buckets of trout in that hole! None of the Palaminos were pulled out!

I talked to my best friend who is at his camp and he fished Mill Creek and the Tionesta, and he caught a total of 4 trout and he fished the entire day. His uncle caught a few, along with his cousin. There were 18 guys at the camp, and they caught a total of 12 trout combined! His uncle won the "big trout pool" with a 13" brown trout [:-]

Hopefully the weather stays nice and they pack the trout back in on Monday (the trout are entirely spread out due to the massive flooding)

Doublelung, sounds like you had a good day!

BM, Sorry to hear that they weren't biting for ya. Maybe it was the unusual warm weather. I mean, it's just not the first day if it's not raining and 40 degrees out! LOL!

I caught nine fish in 2 hours yesterday morning. Clover Creek in Blair Co. First fish, a brookie, was right at 8:00 on a green salmon egg, then I couldn't scratch another. Tried every other egg color I had with me along with worms and nothing took. I switched to a gold spinner and immeidately caught a little brown and then a rainbow. I moved on to the next run and caught six rainbows in a row, the largest pushing 15 inches. Then I had to go to work [:@]. My Dad fished until lunchtime and caught about a dozen fish.

I pulled out 5 brookies in about 2 hours and that was it. Everyone I talked to was having a slow day. The creek i fished was clear and shallow and there wasn't even fish to be seen. Sunday I went out in the afternoon and didn't catch a thing or get a nibble. I talked to a few guys and they weren't doing any good either.....why do we have to buy a trout stamp again?

RE: PA Trout Opener?

I can vouch for the lack of action on little mahoning. I saw 3 fish caught all morning, and one was foul hooked. A few years ago I vowed never to fish that place opening day again. BUT, my regular fishing crew decided to go there and I didn't want to break away, so I sat there with the rest of them catching nothing.

Sunday I went to the stream where I should have been saturday and caught 26.

RE: PA Trout Opener?

My opening weekend was fun but not very productive in terms of the number of trout caught. I was skunked on opening morning but had a great time taking my two year old out. I hiked way up in the middle of nowhere on Sat. afternoon and caught 3 brookies in a stream no wider than most office desks. Sunday morning I was back at it and caught two more but saw quite a few.

Of course, it would not have been opening day without seeing a fight erupt underneath a small bridge where 25 local fisherman were 'fishing'....;)

Got to fish all of 30 minutes all weekend and managed to catch 3. Two of em were wild browns on Beaver Run. The Stockers just seemed to have lockjaw. Nothing on the Branch but we saw some guys hiking up from lower Salmon creek with nice stringers. On the way home from camp Sunday afternoon we stopped at Tom's Run in Cook Forest and the 4 kids with me got into some . I think they got 10 between em.

Just bidin my time till the water warms up a bit and the crappies start!;)

Lakes are definatley the ticket now , all the creeks r still crappy form the floods , heck even twin lakes was murky, but the top lake for some reason was crystal clear.. Noone used lures up there all day and i caught 5 fish on my first 6 casts, on Joe's flies. then i continued to bang them all day , and i went back yesterday after fishing4 other places with no luck. i did manage to land 2 in the stream all weekend tho , but i got a total of 31 in the lake , and a small bass. cant wait til afternoon next week , maybe ill get a nice gobbler and a nice trout to take the taxi man.

If misery loves company, here is my tale. I went out with my 13 yo son on Sat to Oswayo Creek, Eleven Mile and then Genessee River headwater. Between the 2 of us and 5hours of fishing, caught 2 trout, 1 native 4 incher on a minnow and one 9 incher. Also used meal worms, earthworms and nightcrawlers to no avail. I did see some fish caught, but other than that, I hoping for better days. I thought the color in the water was perfect, maybe the water was too cold, maybe I stink as a fisherman. Anyhow, a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work.

Well, it has picked up a bit, but not much!

Monday I went to Brush Creek and between my bestfriend, my girlfriend, and I, we caught a total of 7 trout! I got two, my best friend got four, and my girlfriend got one! We fished for about 5 hours, and we covered about 2 miles of stream! I did see about a dozen dead trout laying in the brush on the sides of the stream! Guess they couldn't make it back in the stream after the flooding!

Yesterday I fished Little YellowCreek and had a pretty good time. In about an hour of fishing, I caught three brown trout and my best friend got four trout and a smallmouth! The fish were following the lures pretty good but still wouldn't commit like normal!

This week, a few of the streams around here are getting stocked, and the YellowCreek Trout Club should be putting there trout in Little YellowCreek (they put big trout in, averagine about 17" or so"

Don't you just love big trout contests? Several of the local clubs sponsor them as well. It is always a wild time latching into a big one on a regular basis.

Hey Frank,

Having Little YellowCreek ten minutes from my house is great. The Fish and Boat Commission stock it pretty heavily year round, plus the Yellow Creek Trout Club has permission the stock it!

Renosky Fishing Lure company is in my town, about 10 minutes from my house, and Joe Renosky's son Jason is the president of the Yellow Creek Trout Club! They have a private section of Little Yellow Creek that is open only to the members, but, this year, the flooding pushed alot of the monster trout out of there 2 mile section, and they also stock the rest of the creek with big trout and have a designated "kids day"! It is great that they have this program so kids can go out and hook some big trout, the funny thing though is that on the "kids day", there are more grown-ups fishing than kids :D
