game commission meeting in PA

Just am watchin the meeting on PCN right now on TV , some of this is bogus , but some ideas are good. I agree with him that the weather had alot to do with the low kill this year , and hopefully next year will be better. Did anyone on here attend ? and what did u agree/disagree with at the meeting?

I saw some of it last night and I thought he (Alt) should have thanked or at least aknowledged the gentleman who wanted to know if he could volunteer to plant seedlings in SGL's. I don't have a problem w/ Alt but he should have recognized the generosity of this hunter. My 2 cents.

I didn't see the show, but was that the sole reason (weather) they're reporting a low kill?

Alt would have no control over that, that planting seedlings and general SGL maintence falls on the Land Manager who dispatches what needs done to the food and cover crews.
About all Alt could have done was put him in contact with his local game commission office, and they would have set the guy up with the land manager.

i didnt see the show, but i keep hearing mr. alt saying that theres 1.6 million deer in pa. i been hunting for a lomg time and there are not 1.6 million deer in this state. he can blame the weather all he wants to for the low numbers, but i just dont think the deer are there. maybe we should slow down on doe permits for a few years. just a thuoght. peace

Well one thing Alt id mention is that the deer they have collard, are doing what most hunters dont do. They r traveling more then a mile or two away from roads , and other civilization . he was saying that the hunters just arent going deep enough to see the deer. But what most hunters in PA dont realize , like the weekend warriors that may only get out once a year for first day of buck , is that with age comes wisdom , we dont have the stupid spikes to shoot at anymore , so the deer we do see when the time comes to put him down , they are alot smarter. Also i have noticed that even pushing deer isnt workin as well , they r laying tight , u have to step basically right on them. I like what he is doin to get our big buck here in PA, so far this year i have seen more wall hangers in PA jsut this season then my last 3 combined. Although this is my first year ofnot killing a buck , it just felt good seeing them.

The things needed here in PA would have to be :
1 sign over tags for doe.
2 more time to hunt , sundays , longer seasons possibly.
3 use of inlines in second season, that would get more guys out there.

At the meeting the farmers were complaining about how the deer jsut arent being killed in the numbers they would like to continue to support the PGC. But the PGC fired that the farmers werent giving them enough options on their land to give to the hunters for use. and the hunters threw in that we didnt get ample time for hunting , enough tags , and or firearms to use.

I don't know where you hunt, but in eastern PA, there are very few places that you can walk in one mile and not run into another hunter who walked in from the opposite direction. I go so far as to state that this is true for most of the state except north central PA and the Allegheny forest regions. Also, if the farmers are complaining about deer, then the state needs to establish listings of farms open to hunting, even if they would say, "you must stop and ask permission, the farmer just wants to know who and how many." Perhaps they could even reimburse the landowner with a fee?

Right you are, there isnt anywhere in pa were you can get more than 3 miles from a road, there just isnt that much distant between roads in PA.

sorry, can't help myself here, hahahahah! how do you like your qdm plan now! i bet Alt never told you that your harvest has to include many, many does, did he? or that your buck kill will be reduced, i bet. with qdm, your buck harvest cannot, will not, by definition, ever be what it was. did he tell you that before he said that there may be more of an older class deer out there? imagine that, deer holding tight, like they learned from a previous season, perhaps? did the dept tell you, or give you an example like this before they convinced you to let them have their way with your herd " to have a good qdm plan in place, you need to have a balanced ratio in the herd of adult doe to adult buck of 3:1. this will take place by the harvesting of anterless deer. by harvest, this means an increase in the taking of anterless deer. if the herd is currently at 80% of carrying capacity, we need to get it to 50-60%, and then maintain this level. to get an older class of deer, we need to put in place antler restrictions. don't worry about any young spikes, etc, that get shot by mistake and left to rot, we figured them in. you may see more bucks, but who cares, they are too small to shoot? most likely you will go longer without tagging a buck, you have to because we put off an entire age class of deer, so more pressure will fall on the 2.5 and older deer." any of this sound familiar, i doubt it. not trying to p... you guys off, trying to fight qdm in vt right now. i know the pa herd needed help, just hoped your dept told you everything first, but it sounds like some of you are surprised at the results.

Something does need done for the deer population and it's not shootin more does. The antler restrictions sure helped the 2 spikes i saw the first day of rifle this year they were huge!! Atleast 12 in spikes... Alt keeps stressin to let the button bucks walk and shoot a doe, I beleive that next year we are going to let the little does walk and shoot the button bucks ahead of them. I know alot of you will frown at this but I'd rather kill one deer then gettin rid of 2 or 3 which will happen if you shoot a healthy fawn who will have her own fawns next year. And where I hunt we need all the deer we can get.
