Question regarding 00 buckshot

This will be my first time using 00 buckshot. My friends club does not allow slugs when performing their "drives".

I was wondering what the effective range of 00 buckshot is? I'm guessing 50yds. max...

can you guys give me some input????

RE: Question regarding 00 buckshot

I have found that around 40 to 50 to be my best range with buckshot.Best thing to do is check it out at the range.000 seems to work well for my shotgun.
Good luck monday.:D

RE: Question regarding 00 buckshot

All depends on your gun and choke. Also different brands shoot differently. You should have patterned your gun weeks or months ago. But as joeturse said you should be good to 50 yds. However I noticed you mentioned slugs, if you intend to shoot 00 through your slug gun let me tell you the rifling in the barrel will ruin the pattern. If you are shooting out of a rifled choke tube you are good out to maybe 20 yds. And shouldn't even be thought of, in a fully rifled barrel. How ever if you are shooting through a choke tube just go and buy one that works. If you don't have time to pattern it than I recomend a modified. It will always work. A full choke is better. But on some guns, and brands of buck shot, It might constrict the pattern too much, so when they come out of the muzzle they are actually fighting each other and and flare out, But with the new plastic wads it seldom happens.

RE: Question regarding 00 buckshot

I'll be using my 00 buckshot through a smooth bore barrel with a full choke tube attached. I did not intend on using 00 buck until my friend told me about his clubs rule a week ago.

when i decide to use the slugs, i have a fully rifled barrel i can switch to

Good luck CatskillHuntr,
Wish I could use buckshot in some of the thickets I hunt. Let us know how it works for you.

RE: Question regarding 00 buckshot

I use 00 Buck when I hunt. I like to keep it within 40 yards. The last 4 deer I've shot were within 30 yds and shot with Improved Cylnder choke. They were all dead before they hit the ground.

Good Luck!

RE: Question regarding 00 buckshot

I don't know how most of you guys get so good of groups with buckshot. My club doen't all slugs either. SO a few weeks ago I bought about 7 boxes of buckshot from 00 to 000 in a variety of manufactors. Well In my ruger red lable 12 guage over and under with modified and full chokes I could not shoot over 25 yards without keeping my pattern less than 30 inches. I mean most groups would only leave one buckshot in a deer at 35 yards and it most likely would not be in a good spot vital area that is. SO what is the trick?

super,,,try 0, #1 AND #4 BUCK, something will work for ya. the larger the buckshot size you use, the more open choke you need. 000 shoots better thru improver cylinder while #4 go better thru your full choke. i shot 3 1/2 inch mag. 00 and put them all in 12 inch circle at 35 yards

RE: Question regarding 00 buckshot

slippery, I didn't know that about the chokes and size of buck shot. THanks I will try that.

Rick I did join a club in november last month but I am not driving as Its not my cup of tea LOL. I joined so I can shoot my handguns and rifles. Its the closest place around for me to go and be able to shoot my guns.

Its pretty nice with a club house sleeping area fireplace bar full kitchen. Its on 5 acres and very private area. Not many people know its even back there. Its close to me only about a 20 minute drive or there abouts. Not real fancy but it fills my needs nicely.
