Help me understand ...

Greetings everyone,

I just signed up for this forum as I am curious about hunting and I was hoping to get a few questions answered as well as make some contacts for possible hunts. At this point, I would like to understand how the hunting quota for deer works. As per my understanding the State of VA allows us to take three deers per season. Is this limit state wise? I mean if we were to get a license for Maryland and West Virginia then would a deer taken from those states count towards the three or would that be an entirely separate count based on state(s)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers -

DF

You need to get your regulations out and read them a lot closer. Deer harvested in another state DO NOT count against your harvest in Virginia. You need to look at the total yearly harvest of deer per license.

Thanks so much. Response greatly appreciated. I see that you are from Midlo,VA. What is a good place to hunt deer around your neck of the woods?

You should join a sportsman's club. It will put you in contact with a lot of people who can help you with your questions, who know the law etc and perhaps show you the ropes. It will also give you a place to practice shooting.

Ya this makes sense. Thanks so much.

Just about every state has a website for their Game & Fish departments. You'll find that each state charges pretty low fees for tags for residents and very high fees for tags for non-residents. Also, if you attend a sportsman's show in your home state, the state Game and Fish Department will often have a booth staffed with employees that can answer a lot of your questions about tags, etc. Have you taken a Hunter Safety class yet? Most states require that before applying for a hunting license. You'll meet other people just getting into hunting and also be able to ask the instructor some state-specific questions. Good luck.
