ya i just noticed that. my brother signed up for a bow coarse a few months ago and on the card they sent him the other day it said about this new way they are doing it with the video. i guess it makes it easier if you cant make the class sessions like they did before

I am an HTE instructor. This is something that is being considered here in PA. I have mixed feelings on it. I do think it will be beneficial to have a site where the people can go and learn before hand. But in no way do I think the video or website should take away from the time in the class. Come on, 10 hours now isn't time enough to go over all that we need to. The class isn't meant to teach people about hunting but to teach safty and ethics. It does begin at home with the parents and we really like to see the kids accompanied by their parents. Too many don't take enough interest and just drop them off for us to babysit. Part of whether the student passes or fails is their attitude and if they present to us that they will be a safe hunter. You can't determine this if they are watching it at home on a video!
Sorry to go off but I do feel if the purpose of home teaching here is to take away classroom time then it should be reconsidered.

I agree it sounds like it may be a way to cut down on time spent going to a 2 day course, but will they come away with the same kind of learning that in the class provides.I don't think we should be taking short cuts when it comes to hunter education and safety for young hunters just starting out.

Iroquois and buckhunter3, I agree we should not have these courses taught at home, there are too many distractions. We need to continue with hands on instruction. IroquoisArcher, I would like to thank you for your time and effort in teaching new hunters, it must be pretty rewarding to do that.

Big John

I was thinking along the same lines as you.

Would it be possible to offer the same program through your local sportsmen's clubs?

Take one of the video they send to each kid... and show the video to a large group of kids at one setting... just like the previous way of teaching the class. That way, the kids will learn even more by questions that are asked... or from the different scenario's that are presented by students and/or instructors.

Also, you will be helping the kids who truly need it and probably wouldn't get the needed help otherwise. Also... you will be sending a message to the NJ Game Commission. That message being: There is no substitute for a "hands on" approach to learning.

Distance learning... for gun safety.

Nuts! At least they will have the field sessions... but do you know anything about them yet?

Good luck, John.
