Coyote hunting training
 

i was thinking today how many people would like to hunt coyotes but dont know how.
this is only way we are going to reduce their numbers other than trapping.
i have idea that our sportsmans club could be a big help on this.

they could have training thing and i bet would draw big following IF word got out that COYOTE HUNTERS ARE NEEDED.

folks, we have got to hunt these coyotes if we want deer hunting.

I had that same epiphany today, so tomorrow I am buying an electronic call and getting started in January. I'll get a feel for it and then worry about learning some techniques with mouth calls later. I do plan on buying some Primos dvd's with Randy Anderson to learn some tricks of the trade.

hunt at night,snow and full moon,use your treestand and dont OVERCALL. start out real low on sounds.

i got 6 last year do to my summit climber.i use no lights and 12 ga shotgun with no.4 shot full choke.

There is a mining pump house at the back of my land that is well lit, I was going to try it at the outskirts of the light, I was going to use my AR-15 or my 257 Wthby, it never dawned on me to try my shotgun, but I may have to try that.

After you get one, can you get others in the same call session there or should I move on to a different hollow?

yes, you can get another in same location.i got 5 fox in little over 1 hr in same spot.all with shotgun.6 shot high brass is fine for fox.

as soon as deer is over this week i will be hunting coyotes.hunting from treestand at highest location on pipelines has got me 6 coyotes after years of getting none.

they just dont wind me and i wear rubber boots and watch my clothes for smell.

they really stick out in snow with full moon.no lights needed.....

those foxpro calls are what most use. they are not cheap but they must work better from what i hear.

where about you seeing them i was a couple near Kato in sproul forest northern centre county but i see hardly any back home in luzerne county.

best way to find coyotes is try to get around hunters and they will tell you where they see them.i hunt western clinton county and we have lots of them.if you can get permission to hunt privateland in winter after deer is over is place to be.

i ride roads in winter at around 10 am or so looking for TRACKS.if i find tracks, i will set up THAT EVENING in that area.
coyotes will take easy way at night.i saw a HUGE coyote at bucktail medical center in so. renovo last night.

it goes 45 pds easy and is rusty color.

There are plenty of vids on getting started on You Tube including most if not all the Primos vids.The easiest way to locate coyotes is just go out early AM or near dusk with a howler and let'er rip.Believe me if they're around you'll know soon enough as the singin begins.They're not at all shy about singin at those times or during the night.Later in the day setup and just do some rabbit distress calls on/off for 20 minutes or so.If they don't come move several hundred yards and try again.Good luck!

Well, I bought a Primos Power Dogg, couldn't pass it up for $129.00 at Gander Mountain. I'm going to get a few mouth calls as well. I know people talk about the Foxpro Spitfire as the best entry, but the Power Dogg is about as loud as I have heard distressed animals while in the field.

I'm going to try and go out in early January, I have just the spot picked out on the back of my land, it's where we see most of them.

yes, a lot use the SPITFIRE.wireless is SECRET for hunting in dark.without it ,no way i could have got 6 coyotes last winter.
best secret is SUMMIT 180 MAX AT 12 FT OFF GROUND.

no doubt that stand got those coyotes for me.i also use WARMBAG now and stay real warm

shot 2 coyotes in same spot this week.male/female.that i have not ever done.both were real close and i shot 2 quick shots from my beretta 12 ga.no lights/in dark/with good moon out.

secret was again,MY SUMMIT 180 MAX CLIMBING TREESTAND AT 12 FT.location was good too. i set up where 2 trails met they pipeline.

guess what, both coyotes came up path and STOPPED before entering the wide open pipeline field.
guys, they are getting spooky or smart so set-up where they will use path ,NOT IN FIELDS.

Is it legal to use a deer slug on them now that the deer season is over?

some states say NO at night,others yes.

Charlie...I used to a lot of predator hunting at night...

In the southern zone, you could use a shotgun with #4 shot or smaller OR a rimfire rifle.. No slugs, buckshot or centerfire rifles allowed.. That was before 17 rimfires, so it pretty much limited you a shotgun with small shot or a .22 or .22 mag rifle...

Now that regulations have been relaxed on rifles, it may have changed.. I have seen posts by fellows in western NY using .22 centerfires at night for 'yotes.. Check the regs or talk to your local fish cop...

I know what you mean Sproul. I've been seeing more coyote tracks than deer tracks everywhere I am hunting.
