NY Capital Region - Where to shoot?

I just got my first rifle a few days ago and I would like to practice shooting. I am from Troy so I cant just go into my backyard and shoot :(. Where can I go to shoot without causing anyone trouble or getting into trouble? After reading a few threads I see people are using some random places to sight in (even though it seems to piss some people off). Am I allowed to just walk into the woods somewhere like Tomhannock and set up a target? Where would the best spot be? Please help, its hard to have this new rifle and not shoot it! :confused0024:

It's best to find a range to use, unless you've got someplace way out in the boonies.
I'm planning on doing a barrel break in here very soon, and I'm not real far away in Bingaling. You're welcome to join me if you like.
I'll be at my family hunt camp, which is surrounded by state land, so no issues with irritating the neighbors.

I grew up in Troy and my dad lives in Cohoes. He is a member of the North Troy Stag Rod and Gun Club. Here is the link to their page. http://northtroystag.org/
Good place. He likes it. I have never been there but he speaks highly of it.
