Catskill-

WNY is Id say one of the best kept secrets when it comes to deer hunting in the nation. Our property produced at the time the 6th best non typical in the state, and also, 8 miles away put out another on the top ten list for typicals in the state.

Im not even in one of the better counties here, either.

bowhuntercorp, I gave you the lowdown once before on the area you will be hunting, deer numbers are high, but not known for consistent quality bucks, you
have to go north and west, it depend' s what your looking for? if you just want to shoot deer your in a good area, if your looking for P&Y and better class of buck,
you are going to have to hunt real hard, and get very lucky,:D

Norsemen is correct ,you should see plenty of deer, depending on your terrain and hunting skills, but down in the southern tier they tend to shoot what ever, and the age class of bucks is predominantly 1and1/2 year old bucks. The doe to buck ratio is also out of balance. There are p/y class animals to be had but a little skill and alot of luck are needed to bag one;)

I can even take the statement that Phade said a step farther, having bow hunted
some very hot counties in the mid west, a few areas in western N.Y. are just a
few short years away from greatness, that will soon be well know for consistent
trophy bucks, the word here is consistent, all areas that carry deer have a slob or
2 slip through the cracks, we all know this, but other areas or more consistent and
higher percentage of mature animals, one key factor in western n.y. is agriculture,
along with heavy cover, were a mature buck can make it a few years to become
trophy size, I know for a fact alot of unreal bucks a being taken each year by people and farmers that could care less of antlers, and only meat hunt, so some
of these bucks dont get any recagnition in state scoreing figures, but thats really
not important, I really dont mind letting the cat out of the bag, beacause I can only
hunt one tree at a time, so this is really no problem, just remember happyness is
a large gut pile:D

Norsmen,I agree with you again, western Ny is a hot bed for big buck in the right areas.Agriculture and a high calcium and mineral content in the soil around the Genesse river is producing deer that you once had to travel to mid -western states or to the canadian north west to hunt.If a little QDM is practiced things will only get better;)

dvdegeorge, you are 100& correct, and the biggest factor will be hunter education,
will be the key, in determining the outcome, within a very short time, [8D]
good luck this upcoming season, i hope you nail a big one,:D

Right now I hunt one property in the Churchville area, and I hunt down south by the Hemlock and Canadice finger lakes. I' m going to try to get a spot in Scottsville this year since I' m moving there in a couple months. How about you?

Shaky, Your in the right area,Scottsville and Rush are Great areas to hunt for trophy class animals;).You need to find private property and get permission(easier said than done)unless you have some $$$ and can purchase land.Good luck
