NY Hunters - Seen any Chasing

Not me yet, bucks are still hanging together where I am at which is the Central New York area. Not much activity this last weekend, deer sightings for me have been declining since opening day.

Hopefully if the temps start to drop, the action should pick up.

Interested in what others are observing.

Tony13804 10-26-2010 11:06 AM

The past two weekends were warm. Deer mostly moved at night...according to game camera. This weekend should be colder!

Good luck!

I,m way up in Northeastern NY .
I,ve been seeing 3 times more deer this year then last (2009)
It was pretty warm all last season and never seen a buck chase a doe in Either my area or 8T Southern tier.
I,ve been seeing a ton of doe and fawns .
Also been seeing a couple smell 4 pointers sparring the last week r so , but it looks like just play,, There out there eating with the doe and fawns all the time.
I have a nice buck on my trail camera pics all summer , but I havent got a picture of him in at least 3 weeks .
I watch a very large area with light pressure most of the time and without bull$h1tt1ng I,ve seen up to 27 deer at one time .
Usualy a bought 25 to 30% within range ..
I passed on 4 doe during bow because there fawns were with them and a small doe during muzzleloader season..
That many deer theres got to be a dandy around or will be ..

Tony13804 10-26-2010 07:04 PM

Hello Tracker...it's amazing how the Bucks stay hidden and all I've been seeing were the many Doe's with young deer all over the place. It wasn't until I put up the trail camera that I actually got to see what type of racks are in my area. There are a few nice sized 6 pointer's, Coyote's and a monster Bear that are in the area. The locals have been complaining about the Bear's activities and many can't wait to gun season to harvest him! Many Coyote's have been spotted and have been causing havoc on the Deer population the past few years.
I am heading up this Friday with a group of friends and they too have orders to leave the Doe's with young deer alone and concentrate on the Buck's and Coyote's.
Anyway...good luck, be safe and best of hunting to all!
Tony

Just started seeing older deer chasing. The last week or so the young ones have been...

Coydogs

Oh ya , Theres a few big coydogs running around my place to .
Last few years I took a few out .
Usualy by now I,ve seen at least one or two in person while deer hunting , but I havent yet ,
And yes I have been told there some bruser black bears in my area ..
I,ve been hunting the particular area since 2000 and have not seen a bear or bear sign. I guess thats a good thing ..
One of my big advantages is I,m in close proximity to Miner Instatute ,,
Miner is the inventor of the train knuckle ..
And Millionare,, Not living anymore but his Estate is doing very well .. They do a lot of testing as far as planting crops and agricaltral, test cows, horses etc.
They own hundres of acres of land, woods, creakes, lake, crops, etc, Some is pulic hunting accesable and a lot is not .
So all the big bucks come out of hiding during a good rut and chase the does,
This is the main reason I dont shoot the doe during bow or early muzzle loader ..
Been VERY WARM las 2 days , hit the 70,s aarrrgghhh..
I didnt bother going out ..
Suppose to be 40s, day time and 30,s nite time starting Friday ..
Should satrt getting good soon ,

PLan on seeing the action start to pick up right after Halloween into the 13th of November. This time frame always makes for more deer sightings, especially bucks for me.

jman22 10-28-2010 05:54 AM

I am also from central new york and not observed any chasing yet. Have been seeing lots of bucks at the one property I hunt, and LOTS of does/fawns at the other. Last week watched two nice eights tangle with each other on and off for about an hour....not very aggressively but they were very focused on each other. Saw a total of five bucks that night. Last night had a big eight come tearing through the woods and shortly after could hear him very aggressively fighting with another buck. Hope to catch up with one of these guys before they do start chasing hard and putting on the miles.

Some guys that hunt the property near me have been seeing lots of chasing. Multiple bucks cruising through hot on the trail of does. Whatever is going on near you its a good time to be in the woods. Goodluck.

Tony13804 10-28-2010 05:21 PM

Good Luck to you too jman...Heading up in 3 hours to do some weekend hunting in Masonville!

bhw 10-29-2010 05:18 AM

I'm near Rochester and each time I see a buck, it has been chasing does. Infortunately, too far away from my stand :(

jman22 10-29-2010 06:19 AM

Saw another nice buck last night cruising by himself. Snuck up on me with all the wind. Never heard him coming. Didn't want anything to do with the grunt tube. Looked like he was on a mission. I think its gonna be a good weekend/upcoming week. Should be lots of action. Hope to see some nice pics.

Pygmy 10-29-2010 08:18 AM

I have been in the woods every day this week and have seen bucks trailing/chasing every day..

This morning I nearly was run over by a doe going about Mach III with two bucks right on her tail...

Big increase in freshly worked scrapes the last 2-3 days also...

alleganydeerslayer 10-31-2010 11:34 PM

IN southwest New York things are picking up quickly. Bucks are chasing and seeking hard. Although I saw a nice 8 pt. locked down with a doe last wednesday. Scary!

jman22 11-01-2010 05:34 AM

I agree that the bucks are starting to seek and chase. Saw several bucks this weekend with heads down, locked on the trail. ALso saw one chasing several does around in a hayfield for over half and hour. One of the big guys I have been after got hit by a car below my house at 1230 in the afternoon yesterday. Real shame and luckily nobody got hurt. If you have the time, stay in the woods as long as possible near some areas where the does are hanging.

nybowhunter 11-01-2010 08:41 AM

This cold weather will help things along. I'll be out this weekend and I'll be bringing some doe in heat to see what happens.

does and tinks

Well seen 10 doe and fawns this morning .
Put out a tinks 69 canister on the way to the stand ..
Didnt seam to bither the doe much ..
Although I saw the first coydog today ..
Had him in the cross hairs at abought 80 yards and again at 120 yards, just couldnt pull the trigger ..
I just hate shooting at 8 am when I usualy stay in the stand till 11 or so ..
He ended up pushing ot a couple fawns ,, they ate again for 20 min. or so and headed back in the woods ..
I always get a little nervous using the doe in heat . I,m trying not to spook the doe so they stay around for the bucks to come in ..
Well should only get better from here on in ...

951hunter 11-01-2010 06:36 PM

Was out on Sunday, saw 3 shooter bucks in 3k. Antler restriction are finally paying off. Had a 10 piont come within 10 yards and froze up behind a tree for 5 minutes. Never offered a shot. Than 15 minutes later had a 6 point 10 yards next to me and shot broadside and missed. I don't know how T/F I missed. But I did. Than 15 minutes later had an 8 pointer at 35 yards. Hit him right on the shoulder. the arrow only went in 1" and fell back out. I've never seen an arrow bounce off of bone before. I got skunked on one of my best days in the new york woods I ever had.

accman 11-02-2010 11:39 AM

Same exact thing happened to my son on a huge rack, 15 yards, steep angle, quartering toward him. He just had the smallest of targets, which he's pretty good at, hit the shoulder bone and the arrow came back clean, broke at the mechanical broadhead screw. The deer ran 25 yards and stopped behind a tree for 10 minutes. No moving around, stood still, then finally took off on a slow, labored trot. My son's still talking to himself about it. He just can't believe it didn't go through. I'm trying to justify it by figuring the angle and the weight of the arrow broke the head at the screw and didn't properly deploy. No blood to speak of, just a little at the impact site, which means he'll live to see another day. We don't usually see deer that big in our area, so it's eating him up. C'est la vie.

*twodogs* 11-03-2010 07:13 AM

7F report. Went out yesterday afternoon, I almost laughed my ass off. Three bucks were running does all over the place but nothing I wanted to shoot at. They were a little too far as well. I know the big one I saw last year survived, he was 60 yards from my stand last year, I am hoping I get a shot at him this year.

My area is very active now and will be in the woods the afternoons after work as well as sun up to sun down this entire weekend.

Canuck33 11-03-2010 08:18 AM

i havent seen much action these last 2 days but i saw chasing last week hope its not over in region 8

SaintHubert 11-08-2010 07:00 AM

I have been hunting northern & southern tier and I have yet to see a buck chasing a doe.

accman 11-08-2010 10:00 AM

Had a small 4 chasing a doe on Saturday in our area. My son and I put out dragline of tinks, with mine nothing followed. But on his, he said a couple of bucks hit that trail and jumped back, looked around, confused, and headed in another direction rather than follow it. Still a little early probably.

Then, sighting in at the rifle camp, took a walk and saw bucks and does chasing like there's no tomorrow. The dominant bucks were chasing off the smaller ones, but it seemed like a lot of travelin together in small groups still and the heavy rut probably not for another week or so. Hopefully right on time for opening day of rifle!!!!
