Who or what are the JW's???
If you really want an interesting take on this you can ask any Bergen County Police officer that served up until the 70's, or even in into the 80's. The NJ State Park Police also just settled some legal proceedings that involved a fatal shooting that apparently involved someone from this group. They can be tough to deal with. Hope that explains it a little. Nothing said herein is intended to be offensive but rather just explain some area history. Here's something else that I found. This article refers to the man as being part of a local Indian Tribe, but I thought this group was denied casino rights (that Indians might be entitled to) within the last 20 years in court because they were not legally considered American Indians, but you know how news paper articles can be. Anyway, here's the link to the shooting story: http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/200...icer_foun.html |

Im gonna take a stab at it and say he means " Jackson whites" its a derogatry term for people of mixed lenne lenope indian, dutch, and black, ancestry that settled that land in the 1600s. I grew up with many of them, and the ones I knew, hunt an area called "stag hill" which i believe is tribal land that belong to them. but Im no expert on the subject. Its not too easy to get away with poaching in sterling these day though, they made the hunting program pretty strict now. Rockland county is really bad though, many good buck dont make it to bow season!
Interesting. I couldn't imagine there are many left in a place like Rockland county with it's property values. I would think they would have all sold out to the city slickers by now. They could buy a big chunk of land elsewhere for what a house and small acreage goes for in Rockland county. I would think they would prefer money over poaching, but maybe I'm wrong. |
Just for the record - I am not a Jackson White. :)

Hey all. I was wondering if anyone here had a few area's they would be willing to share with me in sterling or stewart forest or any forest in that area. I live in NYC and it is real tough to make it up there to scout around and pricey too with gas prices going up and up.
I was looking to do some spring turkey and maybe even line up a spot for coyote and predator in the fall. Any open fields or open area's flat spots , anything you would like to share. I wouldnt expect anyone to give up they're own hunting spots but if they knew of any other spots it would be great. I hunt rifle shotgun and bow and have my Sterling Forest hunting pass and a DEP land pass as well. i got them all covered now just need to fig out where to go.. lol GPS co-ordinance's are even better. PM me and I will give you directions. |
