In the WMU where MY land is situated, bucks now need to have at least three point on one antler, and a minimum of one point on the other. Doe tags available only on a preference point basis. Using a typical deer as a model, this means that anything under 5 points is illegal.
To make a long story short, in 5 hours we saw, withing easy shooting range, 3 spikes (one really big), 2 four pointers, and at least 12 does. Saw 1 "legal" buck (at least 8 points) go by, through the woods at about a gazillion miles an hour, no chance for a shot.
Now, I don't have any problem with "trophy" hunting, but I am a meat hunter. I utilize the entire deer, and antler stew tastes like crap.
It looks like I will not be hunting in New York any more, and this really stinks. New York's deer herd is taking over everyones land, mine included, and the dopes in Albany are making it harder to thin the herd.
All I can do is to try to hit them where it hurts, in the wallet. I will spend no more license money in N.Y.
My rant has come to an end.
What area do you hunt? we are in 3h near liberty, this restriction isent new its been a few years now and its defintley making bigger bucks, we got a big 8 and 7 pointer, which were rutted up like crasy ! their necks where insanely puffed up.

There was six of us hunting opening day in 8Y, 3 people saw a total of 6 deer, 3 of us saw nothing. Had gun shots and people all over the mountains around us but we didn't get any shooting. Today 4 of us hunted and one person saw one doe. No shots fired on our property, but two in neighboring properties pretty close by. Good luck guys, I'll be back up to my "camp" Tuesday night to hunt the rest of the week, then back home to PA for the opener all over next Monday, I love these two weeks of the year!

Saw 11 does and 4 bucks yesterday in 7R, passed on the 2 bucks because they were all young. Shot a big doe this morning and saw 6 others. Also saw 6 coyotes.

Where in 6r are you? I heard loads of shots opening morning. In total this whole weekend heard over 60+ shots. But many of those are far off. I saw 1 doe saturday morning at first light. She walked by me at 20 yards. Saturday evening I sat in my tower blind, saw 2 does. Then this morning I saw 2 does at first light. Very few bucks in my area though, Its kinda making me upset
Next year I'm gonna attempt to make 2 small foodplots by hand. One for spring and one for fall.

We saw quite a bit of activity in New York 6R. Mostly does, but my buddy saw a mature 8 pointer. He was hunting with a shotgun so the buck was out of range. He was hoping it would move in closer but, no luck. I saw tons of does all day long. Took a shot at a big one that was a clean miss.
I can't get over the number of coyote we saw!! I don't know if it's good or bad. Perhaps they keep the deer moving, but there's a sh*tload of coyote in Herkimer county!

Pretty slow for me too. Saw one little spike first thing and a few does over the weekend. The camp up the road from my house did pretty good though, so the deer were up and moving, just not near me..... We heard a lot more shots than last year.

Our team ended up with 4 for the weekend in Otsego County. Jake took his first 8 pointer ever, his 75th whitetail on Saturday morning. Doug and Bruce both scored on Sunday and Brent took his second biggest ever, a nice 8 pointer. Still waiting for pics of Brent's deer.
