Beech/Acorns in NY?
Wondering what you guys are seeing mast crop wise in NY state this year? How are the beech and acorns looking?
Was wondering with all this rain if we'd have a good crop or not? Someone was telling me in years past with lots of rain, the acorns got all mushy inside.
Anyone seeing fewer apples this year as well? Years before every apple tree was loaded, this year one tree might be loaded, another tree totally empty....small in size....maybe due to the late frost in the spring...
Squirrel season starts Tuesday, I'll get an idea then maybe of the nut crops....

I know you asked about NY, can't answer that but here in Central Pa I am seeing tons of acorns in some areas as well as beechnut but in other areas within a few miles I am finding next to nothing. One area had a stand of approx 25 mature white oaks, out of that 25 I only found 3 oak trees producing acorns this year. On our lease in SE Ohio I haven't found any acorns in an area that consists of almost nothing but oaks.

Lots of acorns here in Steuben Co and lots of hickory nuts also..
I've been around a few beech trees and have not seen much as far as nuts on the ground.. However I'll be spending more time in the woods next week when squirrel season opens and I'll have a better feel for the beechnuts in a week or two..Sometimes they are still pretty much hanging up in the branches this early in the year..

My camp is just over the line from Steuben County, in PA. Plenty of hickory nuts, spotty on the beech nuts and apples. I actually have zero apples, but in some nearby areas where the frost didn't get them, there are a few.
Will get serious about scouting for food sources next weekend, when I head up to camp over Labor Day.
One of my cousin's kids spends lots of time hunting areas from Troupsburg to Woodhull. Figure he'll have some idea of how the acorns and other bits of chow are in those areas by then? That boy lives and breathes deer hunting, prefers to archery hunt in NY.
