PGC making good use of our money
WILD TURKEY RESTORATION EFFORTS CONTINUE IN SOUTHEAST REGION
HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Game Comission's wild turkey restoration efforts will continue this winter in Turkey Management Area (TMA) 9A in southeast Pennsylvania, as the agency and members of the state and local chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation plan to release up to 260 wild turkeys at more than a dozen sites. Last winter, the Game Commission and NWTF transferred 230 wild turkeys (168 females, 62 males) to ten release sites in Berks, Chester, Lancaster and York counties. "We release turkeys at an approximate sex ratio of three females for each male because turkeys are polygamous (one male breeds several females)," said Mary Jo Casalena, Game Commission wild turkey biologist. "We identified up to 13 release sites for this winter in TMA 9A. Each release site will receive 15-20 turkeys, which means we will release up to 260 turkeys." Casalena noted that all turkeys will be transferred from in-state trappings. Wildlife Conservation Officers and Deputy WCOs, working with NWTF volunteers, will trap turkeys on private and public lands throughout the state (except TMAs 7B and 9A) where landowners desire to have turkeys trapped or where turkey-hunting opportunities are limited. If releases are successful, this year's releases will complete restoration efforts in TMA 9A. "The closed fall season in TMA 9A, which was put in place by the Board of Game Commissioners last year, will benefit our turkey restoration effort," Casalena said. For more information on the wild turkey in Pennsylvania, or on the turkey trap and transfer program, visit the Game Commission's website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), click on "Wildlife," then choose "Wild Turkey in Pennsylvania." |
RE: PGC making good use of our money
It's nice to see the PGC actually do something. Thanks for posting that Pops...nobody ever seems to bring light to the things the PGC does right.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: PGC making good use of our money
Good post Pops
I think if the PGC would simply agree to commit the proceeds from a turkey stamp to programs like this there would be a whole lot more support :) |
RE: PGC making good use of our money
Thats good to here this will contnue,Thanks to all, even though I dont turkey hunt. Lets not forget all the private people that raise turkeys and just release them.I know of several people that do this just for fun.But I think it is illegal for a private tax payer to release animals. Is that correct?Heck I know of 2 brothers that at there own cost release over 100 turkys themselves.Even though it is appreciated what the PGC and WTF does that couple hundred turkeys sounds like a drop in the bucket. My neighbor lets 80 pheasants break out of his fence everyyear.

The NWTF has always in my opinion done an excellent job here, trimming trees ,planting
food sources etc.I am glad the PGC is working with them on this project. It only shows you what can be done if people work together. |
RE: PGC making good use of our money
TMA 9A? That's my area in eastern Adams County, but no releases in this county? There's a few wild turkey around here, I've seen the most so far (flock of 15) during October flintlock marching single file to feed in a small woodlot. It was nice seeing that because turkeys are a little scarce around here. The season is closed to fall hunting, but someday an increased population of birds may allow it.
