The ticks were bad today

Took the horse out on a little 4 hour ride today at the local gamelands. Saw four deer, no bear or turkey. The ticks were just awlful, I was riding along the dirt road with short grass on the edges. Through the coarse of the ride I pulled 15 ticks off the horses legs, I came home and showered and found one in my hair and another on the bottom of the tub. I am used to finding one or two, but seventeen, thats bad.

17 wow! Thats a bad day. I'm just wondering how in the heck you can find those little things on a horse. Are horses susceptable to lyme disease?

He has white hair and they didn't dig in yet. I thinkhorsescan get lyme disease. It spoiled the whole day jumping off and looking for the little devils. I seen one on a blade of grass. They hang there and when they feel movement or vibration they throw their legs out to catch on to what ever goes buy. I hate them.

yes they are but local vet says most cant afford the treatment for horse.i read article somewhere on this.my sisters dog ran down a rabbit today, i ran after the dog yelling to stop but the rabbit went into a net and went into shock.

i thought i could hold it and try to help ,i could not believe there was 9 huge ticks on that rabbits neck.

anyone that eats a rabbit in my opinion is not good.

dont know but everyone here in pa. is blaming PENNSTATE FORESTRY for the bug problems we are having.they did admitt they released BUGS to improve forest.

dont know if tick was released but a few others were.i see a lawsuit soon against PENNSTATE FORESTRY for damage these bugs are doing to homes, many are getting real mad over bug problems here in pa.

The immature stages are frequently found on small rodents such as meadow mice and occasionally is found on birds and small animals. These are a few ways that Ticks expand their range.[/align]

I put a buddy on one of my stands last fall where I arrowed a 6-pointer and he came back with ticks all over him.
To this day he still calls it my tick stand and laugh about it a bit.
But truth be told we pulled over 100 ticks off of him!!! No joke, it was disgusting.

The highlight, was my buddy with his shirt off, at the truck, on the side of the road.
and me pulling 7 or 8 off him already in-bedded on his hairy WHITE back.
It must have looked like broke-back hunting!!![8D] Yikes!
They give me the hegee-jebees, and I think I would rather bump into a 1/2 dozen snakes!

i said i got bit by a bunch of ticks.he then asked if i needed a ride to hospital.this was 20 years ago and i still laugh about it when i tell story.

somehow we have got to put pressure on our legislators to get this problem corrected, its killing tourism all over the northeast.

very sorry to hear that PATS.i read something about it on the pennstate topic about woman who has 5 horses.she sprayed the whole area where horses walk and play but cost her small fortune.

i think pennstate may soon be sued if they dont find way to stop these bug problems.they released many of thesebugs, these APHIDS ,i went into my attic and i bet there is 5000 dead aphids in there and smell was awful.they are all thru my insulation in attic.most people dont crawl into there attic like i do,so they dont know what is there.

if they did ,i bet they would freak out.

state needs to pay for having your home sprayed each year, they released the APHIDS.funny not 1 aphid is in woods they are all in our homes.:)

If you are talking about stink bugs they are not aphids. You could have 10 million aphids in your attic and they wouldn't produce an odor because they are so small and would simply dry out. Stink bugs were not introduced by PS so they don't have to worry about being sued.

Apparently those stinky Asian ladybugs have been in the US since 1916.

When they get in an attic, it can be a real pain. The lodge where we stay in Illinois has had big problems with them. On warm October days, the owner will fill his 5 gallon shop vac with em daily. They do smell awful too. kind of like damp moldy dirt

Ticks are lthe worst I have ever seen them in Delaware, I do a 30 min walk everyday in a woods, have to stay on the groomed trails and douse myself with Perm and cutter for mosquitos each time before I walk....

RE: The ticks were bad today

I pick up at least 3 or 4 ticks every time I pick strawberries even though I put on bug spray. AS yet . I haven't been bitten this year, but I have been bitten at least 30-40 times over the last 10 years. When we were kids we never had to worry about ticks, but back then we didn't have any deer.

RonM 05-31-2009 03:29 PM

The ticks I am experiencing are the wood ticks not the deer ticks, and they seem to resist the permonone....

Since we just had one of the wettest Springs on record they're verybad here so far. Yesterday I walked to the end of my back yard and back, a distance of a little over250 yards, and found six ticks on me. Time to break out the Ortho Max! [:@]

RE: The ticks were bad today

The ticks are bad and have been bad for a long time.Like coyotes, they've been here for decades and no one released them. Why would anyone release something that really serves no purpose? For the life of me,I could never find any use for ticks or deer flies.Horrible creatures

I'd like to see them disposed of but I don't know how you could kill them without killing other beneficial bugs.

I have horses andfrom what I understand, they can get lymes disease. However,I know alot of people that have horses and I don't know anyone who's horse ever contracted it.Regadless,I don't like ticks crawling on my horses anymore than I like them crawling on me.The solution is permethrin.I buy it in the form of permanone and spray my cloths wth it.For my horses,I buy it in a concentrated form and spray them down whenever we take them on trail rides. Two weeks ago,we did about 15 miles in elk state forest and neevr had a tick on us or the horses. You can also buy fly spray that has 5% permethrin in it.It works.

Yet you are the only one around that can document the demise of deer in 2F and 2G before the PGC had a chance to destroy the herd as the hunters of PA have grown to expect. What were the reproductive rates of those days?
At the time of the chestnut blight deer numbers were very low, maybe lower than even today.;)

The enemies of deer are like the sun rise. new and brighter everyday.[8D]

About the same as they are today. In other words, the herd was just as healthy even though there were a lot more deer.

Theres a product out called Bug Stop that will clean the ladybug/beetle/stinkbug/box fellers etc's clock. Spray it around your windows in the fall before they show up... kills em like a 12 gauge kills ground squirrels. :D
