Got A Pa Bear Today

I'm sick of bears. I have bears tearing up my trash. Bears eating my raspberries. Tearing up my garden. Bears screwing up my gobbler setups TWICE this season so far. One even got my decoy. And now I had one in the windshield of my Cavalier today. Was on my way to the turkey woods, and just hit 50-55mph. Suddenly there he was....came up out of a driveway and I never even had a chance to hit the brakes. I ducked and shielded my face with my hand for the obvious impact, and when the airbags went off I got a knuckle sandwich. He hit the windshield, over the roof, down on the trunk and onto the road. I seen stars. How I got the car stopped without hitting anything else is beyond me. I got untangled from the airbag, and stumbled out of the car. Through broken glasses, I could see the bear staggering through the parking lot of a tourist shop. I got a ride home, and at daylight we went looking for him and found him still alive behind the tourist shop. The PGC NC Headquarters was notified when they opened at 0700 and by 8:30am WCO Rich Shire arrived and dispatched the bear. I commend WCO Shire and his DWCO whose name I can't remember for their quick action. Shire was notified of the mishap at 0800 and by 0830 he was on the scene.

My only negative comments go to our PGC BOCS.......

C'mon folks! WAKE UP! The bears are out of hand up here in the NC AND YOU AND YOUR BIOLOGISTS KNOW IT!!!!!!!!!. We need some RELIEF! Longer seasons, extended seasons, or whatever it takes! But this population explosion NEEDS ADDRESSED NOW!

Thanks folks. The soreness is subsiding, a rental car will be delivered to my door tomorrow in the AM. The insurance adjuster will be here to tell us if the car is totaled, which he thinks it will be.

Hopefully this time next week I'll be driving something a little more bear proof and back at chasing the feathered devils.

One thing is for sure and that is one hunt you will never forget ,even though you didn't get to go hunting. Good luck on getting that long beard. You deserve one after that.

Well.....it's official. Car is totaled. Will be getting a new set of glasses courtesy of Mr Bruin to.

It's time for a longer archery bear season. I'd also like to see the firearms bear season begin on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and run right through the week until the following Saturday for a season or two. I'd also like to see an extended season during firearm deer season for a year. I don't want to see them exterminated like we did in some areas with the deer, I'd just like to see a few less bears. There are just to damned many.

Like has been said...Glad you're OK. I understand your sentiments. We're steadily seeing bear around our camp in 2G and have had some close experiences this year already. We don't go out at night anymore without a flashlight and a quick look-see.
Down home in Indiana Co., we have a problem with bears dumping our garbage all over the road and scattering it. I fixed that problem by spraying the containers with PB Blaster. The bears don't like it at all. But the darn crows have become handy at causing clean-up now. Seems a guy can't win.......

Just seeing what happens to some vehicles when they hit deer is frightening. Hitting an animal that's bigger and tougher, your accident could have been worse. Glad to hear you are "OK"! I know it sucks, but you can replace the vehicle. Bring back SPROUL!!!

Many years ago a Potter uncle hit an angus beefer that probably weighed about 600lbs or more. It was standing in the middle of a small bridge on a foggy, rainy night, unc never saw it until it was too late. Couldn't have gotten around it anyway, if he had seen it. He hit with a big ol' 1957 Buick, back in the days before seatbelts.

Totaled both the angus and the Buick, almost totaled my aunt and uncle. We used to pick on him for buying old Buicks, but after that deal, he said he'd never drive anything else. Back then, his "other car" was a B-60 Mack. As Manyspurs noted, usually ain't much of a fuss hitting stuff on four legs, with one of them rascals.

HA!!!!!!!! They sure are good at patting themselves on the back. Perhaps their current spokesperson should talk to the WCOs in the northern tier counties and see how folks REALLY feel. My hunting partner as of this morning has seen his 7th bear in as many locations since opening day of spring gobbler season. I'm up to number 5 in as many locations during said season, and I missed close to 2 weeks of hunting. There's to damned many.

RE: Got A Pa Bear Today

But they kill their fair share of fawns ,so that makes them a preferred species. I'd be willing to bet that if they made bear season run with the concurrent deer season that would thin the population.

Rare words indeed these days when it comes to critters in PA;)

It must be Gary Alts fault!!;)

Make it 8 bears on the spring season for me. Seen a sow and 2 cubs last night while roosting gobblers and was treated to a great show with mom putting the cubs in a tree. Still to damned many.

It must be Gary Alts fault!!
Gary Alt is where he belongs now. Let's just wish him a happy life amoungst the eco-terrorists, thePink Teamand the liberals and forget he ever lived in Pa.

Did they let you keep the bear?

ManySpurs 05-21-2009 06:26 AM

RE: Got A Pa Bear Today

They wanted $100 from me if I wanted to keep the bear. Instead, the bear was loaded on the PGC vehicle and taken to the game dump on SGLs 208.

Why do you need to pay them? Is it their position that the bear is property of the PA Game Commision? Well, then I think they should be paying your deductable. Right? Ask them to pay or go to court.

ManySpurs 05-24-2009 07:18 AM

RE: Got A Pa Bear Today

Well, it sounds reasonable. But to go to court, I'd spend well over my $500 deductible in legal fees and representation. I think I'll just take the loss and continue on with my belief that the PGC can go to he11 for all I care.

So far this year my bear count is7. That is two more than I had seen all last year. 2 at my deer feeder, 1 at my mother's house, 1 boar, 1 sow and 2 cubs at my father's house. All of these have been seen along the edge of town. I haven't seen one yet in the deep woods, I like seeing them but not tearing into garbage at my parent's back yards or in my food plots for deer. The bear season seems to open rightafter the time they run out of food and go to den up. Coincidence???

RE: Got A Pa Bear Today

Make that number 8for bear I have seen. Almost hit one on my way home from work. I thought of this thread right away.Would have been 9 if I had been one of the dozens who saw a black bear digging through the dumpster at our local Pizza shop last night. Great job PGC we now have so many bears around my area that they are now traveling into town to find food. At this time of year they are usually satisfied eating fawns but I guess when there are fewer and fewer deer and more and more bear that is to be expected. In the area where I live it is at the point where the population will become a nuisance to more than they are worth and more dangerous. These bear I have seen have had little fear of humans and are willing to travel into town from the mountains that surround us here in the valley. If the carrying capacity hasn't already been exceeded we wouldn't be having so many bears traveling into town for food. And every time a nuisance bear is caught within an hour drive it seems they are being released on our local SGL's. I guess multiple 300, 400 and last year a 600 pound black bear has no detrimental effect on habitat. The PGC releases them here as fast as they can catch them. And now we are seeing these culvert traps popping up all over at homes where these bear are causing problems. The bear is caught, tested, documented, tagged and released just down the road from where he was causing the problem only to return that same night.

For those who want to hunt them look up 4c and 4d Schuykill /Dauphin County lines. Tower City to Williamstown. Buy your tags and come kill everylast one you can.... if the season comes in before they run out of food and den up.
