RE: Why is spring turkey hunting till noon only?
From PGC's website:
Why do we hunt until noon in the spring? The spring turkey season is open during the nesting season and incubating hens most often leave their nests during the warmer parts of the day, typically the afternoon, to feed, defecate and drink once the air temperature has warmed sufficiently that the eggs will not cool too much while she is gone. The idea of restricting hunting to the morning is to protect nesting hens from disturbance, nest abandonment and accidental harvest. However, the 29 states with all-day spring hunting have not shown any measurable turkey population decrease, and have shown approximately a 10-15% increase in gobbler harvest. Most of the northeastern states maintain more conservative spring hunting hours than states throughout the remainder of the United States. Extending the spring hunting hours is an option the Pennsylvania Game Commission is considering. Some possibilities could be hunting until sunset, hunting until 6 or 7pm (to control roost shooting), or extending hours only during the second half of the season. This final option would cause less disturbance/mortality to nesting hens because hens become less likely to flush from their nest during the later stages of their 28-day incubation period. |

RE: Why is spring turkey hunting till noon only?
ORIGINAL: BTBowhunter IMHO, PA has quite a few "run and gunners" and plenty more who simply don't obey the "calling only" rules. How many of us has been scared s__tlesswhen being stalked by some clown while we sat calling? I have no problem getting out of the woods by noon and leaving the birds alone. Besides, there are trout, crappies and walleyes to be caught!:D Throw in a beer or two with those crappies and walleyes and we got a fine meal.:D |
RE: Why is spring turkey hunting till noon only?
Yep. Easy to throw trout back. Even when thrown in the skilet when they're still floppin they're still trout. [:'(]Yuck!
But as for those wally's and crappies, sharpen the fillet knives boys!! Not sure I could make it between bow seasons if not for the finny feasts! |
RE: Why is spring turkey hunting till noon only?
You can even smell the Purina Puppy Chow they feed those trout as they cook.
But walleye, crappie and some big "ol" bluegill and a ice cold one;) |
RE: Why is spring turkey hunting till noon only?
Wild Brook trout raised on bugs and crayfish are pretty good table fare but I can no longer bring myself to kill thosecolorful little guys. It just seems criminal to turn something as beautiful as a wild brook trout into a few quick bites. Of course Wally's and crappies are nice lookin fish too but I force myself to get over it

Yeah, Walleyes, crappies and big gills are nice lookin!
Especially rolled in a little flour and fried to a gorgeous golden brown. It don't get any prettier.[/align] |

How about letting one thread on the NE forum - asking a question about NY by a NYer -NOT be hijacked to Pa and their "problems" with the usual cast of characters?
