RE: crossbows in NY state
ORIGINAL: sits in trees ORIGINAL: Bernie P. Well for one thing if bow hunting wasn't more of a challenge there would be no need for a bows only season and we'd be lumped in to the regular season with all the gun hunters. As it is I'm surprised we still have an ML season.Years back you had to use patched balls and no scopes. With the scoped ML's we have today 200 yd shots are possible.Speed loaders allow for much faster loading/second shots. All things considered it's pretty difficult for us to claim we need a special ML season these days.Shooting a TC Omega with a Leupold scope I certainly cant make that claim.Least ways not with a straight face :).A few years ago rifles weren't legal in Chenango Co where some friends built a camp.I used my TC there because it had it all over my 12gauge for accuracy and reach.Archery season is headed the same way. That aside how can you compare the fun factor shooting an Xbow to shooting trad or compounds.I sold my Oneida just because it wasn't any where near the fun of shooting my longbow or recurve. To me shooting an Xbow seems pretty dull. Why bother? What I said in the first sentence above.Unless we're willing to accept some limitations on the gear we use we'll just screw ourselves out of the ML and bow seasons.A year or so back I read an article on bowhunting in a local paper. He talked about a new compound that someone was trying to market. The thing had a barrel on it and even a novice could shoot tight groups at 50 yds with it.Most deer shot in NY during the regular season are taken within 50yds.The animal rights groups can use all this to help them eliminate our special seasons. They already have us dead to rights as far as equiptment goes on our ML season. With sympathtic, rabid anti gun politicians controling both houses and soon the White House such legislation is well within their reach.Particularly so here in NY.Do we really want to put our bow seasons in jeopardy as well. |

RE: crossbows in NY state
This is my opinion take it for what it is.
Archery season exists for anyone in NYS that wants to purchase the archery privilege. Its for all to take advantage of and enjoy. The same as any hunting season in NYS. If one chooses to not hunt it with a bow, then thats your decision, period. Its your loss. Deal with it. Keep archery as archery. What I don't understand for the life of me is why in heck we need to introduce another weapon into the archery season for more hunters to enjoy it when its alreadly there for you. Seems kindairrogant to me. Compounds have come such a long ways in technology that alone should be reason enough to archery hunt if more want to get into it. The crossbow is heavier, bulkier, noisier, and just a pain to lug around. Why in heck would anyone want to use it over any bow anyways! I'll tell you why. The main reason is becasue its easier to shoot, andmore accurate. It takes less practice to shoot one accurately. Its obviously more like a gun when it comes to shooting technique. I watched Ted Nugents reality show, where city teenagers, that never picked up any type of a weapon before. Each shot a crossbow at 20yds, and hit the center doton their 1st shots!! Where isthe challenge in that? Its a lazy mans answer to get out earlier, period! Thats the bottom line! The only justification for allowing the crossbow into any archery season is for the handicap. If lessoning the restrictions for a legit handicapped hunter would allow them more time in the woods. I have no problem with that. Otherwise keep the crossbow out of archery. There's no need for it. Quote me & bash me, but its my opinion. |

RE: crossbows in NY state
sit in trees it seems your just not getting all of what we're saying. With xbows success rates will go much higher as they have with modern ML gear. When that happens we run the risk of losing these special seasons. It may take a few years but that's the reality we face.Today's compounds really don't require much practice time to become proficient with them but success rates haven't gone through the roof as they will with Xbows. All I'm saying is I'll gladly take lower success over losing my bow season. If it comes down to it I'll gladly go back to patched balls and open sights in ML for the same reason.I don't deny part of the reason I hunt with trad bows is because I like the added challenge they bring to it.There is no better feeling than seeing my arrow fly to the mark.I get so much more out of taking a deer or any critter for that matter with my bow I cant comprehend why anyone would give that up by using an Xbow just to fill another tag.Nothing worthwhile is easy.

If not, than we must assume there is an importance of deer hunting being challenging, in that case whats the point of Xbows? We cant have it both ways. |
RE: crossbows in NY state
I'm not really sure how much Xbows will effect harvest rates.A big part of the reason we have such good deer pops now is several years of mild winters but in my area now the temps are running well below normal and snow fall is well above. It only takes one or two harsh winters to put a healthy dent in deer numbers.Same goes for grouse and turkey. It gets pretty tricky to manage pop numbers as they vary widely depending on the area.If they do decide to allow xbows I think it would be best to limit them to the counties in the southern tier that have abundant deer numbers/doe permits for the first few years untill they can get a realistic view of the impact.
