Anyone started coyote hunting as of yet. I know it is throughout the year, however I started last year after late season deer was over. Any PA yote pics would be great.

RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
I try but never have called a coyote in, had a few mess with my traps but thats it. missed a nice blonde yote by murrysville w the Xbow the last day of gun season but thats it.
Do you SW PA guys have alot of luck calling dogs? i have been out several times and it is really tough and frustrating but i hear its like musky fishing, can get em unless you try. |
RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
The son of a friend of mine just killed a 44 lb. coyote in central Indiana Co. on thurs. of this week. His first time out, and with a cheap $40 caller. Big red one. He's getting it mounted. Go figure.........

RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
Sproul.....thanks for the tips, i never really considered using a stand but it sounds like a good idea especially with electronics that you can leave on the ground. I will also have to look into the rabbit scent to help the circling dogs. I was out the other evening and had a red fox atleast i think it was circle and never came in.
I am also still trying my hardest to get a toye in my trap but they are sooooooo smart. Either wont come in, flip the trap, or dig it up... now that its legal i have a trick for them tho, gonna hang some snares on known yote trails ( all dog tracks on the trail) and see what happens. |
RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
Got this guy on the first day of rifle season in Indiana County. I have no idea how much it weighed but it is at Zellmans Taxidermy getting done in a full body mount. I will be out within the next week trying to kill a few more off my property. The population is really growing around here and they have put a dent into the turkey population.

RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
Sorry Sproul, I enter a few coyote contests each year but the USP's will NOT be one of them.
Maybe I'll check it out and send the PGC a donation equal to their entry fee;) Buckmagnet, Nice lookin dog there! Congrats |
RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
Haha sproul hopefully your bedtime stories will pay off. This last week b4 i head back to college ( Indiana University of PA) i am going after them hard. I have about 7 footholds 1.75 sleepycreeks and some bridger #2s out and a few snares trying to bag one. Il also test my luck at calling a few evenings.
For those of you that trap the illusive brush wolves what sets work the best with what lures? The only sets i really know for them is dirtholes with some redfox urine and a food or call lure in the hole. I got this lure called Gusto from my local fur shed and man its the worst smelling thing ever and guys rave about it just havent seen any reviews from PA guys. I have used it with no luck, its a very strong scent so perhaps im using too much? IDK but i have one yote under my belt i got while groundhog hunting last summer so the pelt was worthless. I just want to get a big one and get a nice mount so hopefully it will come together soon. |

RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
I'm no trapper but my BIL just caught his fifth one this week. He's been catching them in a dirthole set with rotting bobcat meat as a lure. Not a bad year for someone's first year trapping.
|
RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
Not at all a bad year if he caught 5. i just want one lol. I did manage to catch my first red fox the day after christmas which was cool im getting him tanned.
I caught a rabbit in a trap this morning so i used the left overs from him around my sets so hopefully that may trick ol wiley to let his gaurd down for a free meal. |

ORIGINAL: BTBowhunter did you know that DCNR has from what i hear millions of dollars from just 1 GAS WELL ALREADY.i heard it could be 50 million from 1 well but dont know if true cause gas is not out of ground yet. can you guess at how much money the PGC will make from our gamelands. ![]() if it happens, it could be in billions.oh my;) I think you made a boo boo. That certainly is not a quote from me[&:] I'm sure it was a mistake when you tried to post but that post is nothing I put up!! |

RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
Well the weather is pretty terrible lately for both trapping and tryin to call in the brush wolves. Checked the traps this morning to find nice mud puddles where my sets are, for being my first yr trapping it is just so frustrating having my sets washed out, frozen, and little success. But from what ive heard noone is really having an all star year, other then the obvious people like Phil Brown who at my last inquiry was at around 680 reds so far. I just wish he would come out with me for a day and show me how its done lol.

RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
Nice dogs. I got one on my wall from 5 years ago went 54 pounds. Kept the skull had a wall rug made. I like ot call them in. But if snow is down will iuse the Sproulman method. I will be hunting w/ a Inline this t=year during Mosquito Creek Coyote hunt. I saw a rabbit decoy battery operated at Gander for 20 bucks, those bring em' like magnets when you hit that rabbit distress squeal. If they hang up out of my shotgun range I will use the mouse squeaker to bring em' in closer. The most wily animal in the woods to day in PA/OH

RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
Sproulman, is it true that if you have coyote you will not have fox? Is that an old wives tale or what? I guess the fox and coyote compete and the coyote will kill the fox(s)? I've shot both, I won't pass on either as they have decimated my rabbit and grouse population. I want o mention avian predators but thatis illegal to pop them out of the trees isn't it?

RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
I feel that its a myth that if there are coyote on your land all the fox will be killed, i think its only in a situation like a fox is feeding on a carcass or something and the yotes come in, then i think the yote will kill the fox over competition for food, but i dont think yotes look for foxes to purposely kill them.
Made a few sits tonight in the full moon and snow storm, it felt like the perfect night to get a coyote to come in due to a growling stomach. I did manage to have some deer come check out the rabbit distress but no yotes. My buddy and i setup just out of view from where a grey fox had come across the field and driveway back toan oldfarmers house tho, so we had a response. Just so happened we setup on the wrong side of a bend in the driveway where the treeline came to a point, woulda had him no questions about it if i had just posted up 20 yards shorter. My heart dropped to my feet when on the walk out we saw a brand new set of track INSIDE our tracks on the driveway but i guess tahts why they call it hunting and not killing. |
RE: Any SW PA Coyote Hunters?
Weathers gonna get even colder, they should be moving, got some traps out now. I found some old food cache in the woods yesterday that i set on, where the coyotes actually dug up either food they had hidden or a fox had, so times are getting tough for the dogs, maybe they will let their gaurd down some this weekend!

When it comes to competition for food wolves will kill coyotes and coyotes will kill foxes. Here is a clip Warning it is graphic but it shows how serious competition for food among canine species is. I have seen fox tracks in areas where there are many coyotes but very few compared to areas where there are very few coyotes. The majority of foxes usually move on to other feeding grounds when the coyotes move into their area. |
