RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
Acorns seem to be down a bit here in 2B and 2D. Plenty falling on my new steel roof at camp in 2F though

RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
I was out fishing about 3 weeks ago here in central NY and the acorns were dropping along the water edge like freakin rain! Landing on the metal docks and steel roofs. It looked to be a good crop.
Not much matter to me I do not ever remember seeing any acorns left by the time bow season starts in the southernteer anyhows! |
RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
Was out walking my favorite game lands this morning. Was looking for an early season stand site, ie acorns, walked all the oak ridges and found little to no acorns. Either on the ground or in the trees. Even the Beech nuts were scarse. I'm in 3C.

RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
Lehigh county, yield is low here as far as i have seen at least. The last Really big yield was about 4 years ago.
|
RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
I've noticed that too! i have felt that way for several years actually...i say its because there are too many squirrels

RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
So why the lack there of, dry conditions?
|
RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
By me in 3c the acorn crop is quite good.White oaks are way off,not many white oak acorns on the ground.Rock oak are very prolific,I was on a flat Sunday that had so many rock oak acorns on the ground it looked like they were being dumped out in buckets.
How can a person from Endicott be in 3c? |
RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
Also in 3Cand its first time in a few years we actually seem to have a decent acorn harvest. Last couple of years we had a real bad gypsy moth infestationbut last year it started to die down and this year it was fine. First time I can go outside and actually pick up acorns and the bears haven't been bothering the garbage or bird feedersince around august this year so you know there is something out there feeding them.Good luck to all this year.

RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
Little to no acorns at any of my hunting spots. THere are some behind my house(PA-2B), Almost none at my main hunting spot(PA-2D), NONE in my Ohio spot, and this weekend I will check my last remaining 2D spot for any.

I think that contributed to the mass acorns we see on the ground in the areas that got hit by it.It was the tail end from that hurricane. |

RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
I did get up to camp (2G) last weekend. Due to some projects at camp, I didn't get out into the woods as I'd hoped to check the situation out. What I DID see, however, were acorns in the yard. There isn't an oak tree within 100 yds. of camp, and then only one. Something must be finding enough of them to be dropping an occasional one or two in the yard. They were whole acorns, not nawed up pieces.
I do hear that 2D is spotty, but there seem to be plenty here at the house. Our grandkids were here yesterday afternoon, and my wife sent them outside to see howmany each of them could find. Three of them (aged 5-8) found close to 200 of them in about 15 min. All in our front yard. Looks OK here.... |

RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
Bad year for oaks/acorns in my area of SE Pa (5-D). Acorn drop/density is regional for sure, as well as tree specific. Last year was one of the best in my area in a long time. This year sucks![&o]

RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
.Off to hijack another thread AGAIN, bluebird2?? Just what does your input have to do with this year's acorn crop??????? Do you have any other life than butting into topics that don't concern your hatred for the PGC???? Man, you're obnoxious!!!! Your attacking the wrong guy for hijacking this thread. Sammy Tat and BTB started a discussion about the size of the WMUs and if the PGC manages deer based on hard winters. I don't hate the PGC because they are just doing what DCNR , the timber industry and political pressure forced them to do. Everyone on the deer management team knows that the habitat can support twice as many deer as we have now. But if they want to keep their jobs and get promotions they have to do what the politicians demand. |
RE: LACK OF ACORNS?

Thats funny, Don't they do that with herd management and winter storms? BTW, you are the only one that responded to my post in which you accused me of high jacking this thread. So I guess that makes you a co-conspirator. |

RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
......Furthermore, bluebird2, RSB never made a post in this thread. Go back and check. YOU are the one who once again took comments from a totally different thread and tried to weave them into this one. It's just what you do...........

RE: LACK OF ACORNS?
So according to you it is just fine that Sammy introduced the size of the WMU's and the effects of winter weather, but I can't respond to his posts with comments made by RSB? That is a rather strange perspective.
Also note that your last two posts have nothing to do with the acorn crop and should have been conveyed as a PM. The acorn crop in our part of 5 C is pretty sparse but it really doesn't matter since the deer in this area do not rely on the mast crop to fatten up for the winter. |
