A thank you to the PGC!!!
This was the first season where we were actually allowed to hunt until dark. I know, I certainly welcomed the chance to stay in the woods during that last half hour. It did allow me to see deer where I would have been walking out under the old rule. I even had a shot opportunity during that time.
There has been no indication that safety was compromised as some predicted there would be. It was a long overdue and very welcome change!!:D |

Amen.

True That!!

RE: A thank you to the PGC!!!
Cannot argue with that one bit. Ofcourse there were times when it was legal to shoot and I sure as heck would not have been able to see what I was shooting at but, more often than not, the extra time was a blessing in terms of seeing animals. ;)

I watched the clock pretty well at days end and on dark and dismal days, I was climbing down maybe 5 minutes early. On clear days, especially with snow, it would have been nice to be able to stay a just a little bit longer.
No chart can anticipate the exact amount of light at a given time but it was certainly more sensible than the past rules. I love the new rules!!! Now if we can just get the bigger fines in for poachers........ |

Throw in another Amen! :)
Recall many evenings in rifle season, that there was enough light well after quitting time, to identify legal deer, so this one was a major grumble of mine for years. It (the extension) almost passed several years ago, but was shot down by the BOC when it came up for consideration, based on advice (pressure)from LE. As for pushing forincreased fines/penalties for major infractions, many of us are also trying to apply some pressure to the legislature to finally get off'n their duffs and have PA join the Interstate Violator's compact, so hunters cited for major infractions in other states, can't hunt here either. And that works both ways: Anyone citedin PA, couldn't hunt in states that belong to the compact. Our participation is long overdue. |
RE: A thank you to the PGC!!!
extermination on game lands is more like it.
I think they need to open all of the roads on the SGL and they could just get rid of the deer there. |
RE: A thank you to the PGC!!!
As far as closing time. Have many of you actually looked at your watch while hunting. I hunt until I can safely hunt and see my pins. Do you really look at your watch????

RE: A thank you to the PGC!!!
I have had deer come in on me asI was about to climb down, and they trapped me in the tree well past dark. I didn't exit because I didn't want to spook them from the area and my tree in particular. Is this a violation so long as no attempt is made to take an animal past legal hours?
What about walking out ofthe closed road areas of the ANF that takes over an hour to get out? We start walking before dark and it is pitch dark by the time we get out to the truck. I don't believe the rules are written that hunters must be OUT of the woods at a certain time, just that no animal shall be taken past legal hours. These rules always confused me a bit, so I simply never will take an animal at or beyond twilight. I'll get him another day! I dread taking one late in the day anyway for fear of having to trail it in the dark. I like mornings! |
RE: A thank you to the PGC!!!
Greg, this straight from the PGC office in Harrisburg. Being in the woods with your gunor bow after dark is legal so long as you dont have a round chambered or an arrow nocked.
Probably every bowhunter has been trapped by deer coming in as it gets too dark. Quiver the arrow an you're legal! The way we got this is when my buddy got met by an overzealous deputyat his car one night and was told if he wasnt at the car by quitting time the next day he'd get cited. He and the deputy sort of had a troubled past not related to hunting. My buddy called the PGC, clarified the rules and reported the deputies threats.Deputy dawg never botheredmy buddy again. |
RE: A thank you to the PGC!!!
Got to give the PGC credit for finally catching up with other states. Now can we eliminate the backtags and automate the harvest reporting? We are trying to save trees in PA by decreasing the deer herd but the PGC sure does use alot of tree based material...aka paper....lol
