Your best bet is to get a soil test which will give you an idea of what you need to do to prep your food plot as well as what to plant. Deer Cocaine is illegal in NY.

It's a shame that people want to hunt, but they don't want to hunt to get.

How easy do you want to make it?

Planting a food plot is a lot of hard work and costs lot's of money. LOT'S!

Just for one acre of Food plot in Pennsylvania, we spent $2000.00

It was already a cleared field, but it only had about 2 - 3 inches of top soil and was really rocky underneath that.

By the time you buy your lime and your fertelizer and pay a man with a tractor to plow, till, disc, harrow and run his grain drill over the place to plant whitetail clover - you could have went to thebutcher shopand bought several100 lbs of the best beef stakes.

Even good land might cost you $1000 an acre to plant.

I didnt thinks deer cocain was illegal anywhere its minerals and if you see the whitetail paradise DVD series it shows how people manage hugh land and they get no where near $2000. we plant a 4 acre field for around $200 thats seed and fert

i cant see how it'd cost 2000$ to plant one acre. If you have you're own equipment you can do it for a fairly decent price. We put in a acre and a halfof clover last yr for right around 60$.

There is no mineral supplement or food for deer that is legal in NY right now. They basically took all the guesswork out of it - and made it all illegal in NY 2 years ago.

Costs of foodplots vary widely.

A plot on good soil is fairly cheap to do. You can mow, spray, disk and plant without a whole lot of issue - but if the soil needs Lime and fertilizer (which most will) - its not a cheap proposition.

I say start small - read &learn - than graduateto an acre or two foodplot.

We spend about $1500 planting 10-12 acres. This cost does not include gas, equipment or our time. FOr us - its a bargain.

Buy a book - http://www.amazon.com/Planting-Food-Plots-Other-Wildlife/dp/0970749341

My advice for people that are starting out is to contact the real seed companies that has developed products specifically ment for deer, and they will send you their catalog's. Not some local feed and seed store that is selling something ment for cows and horses.

IMPERIALâ„¢ Power Plant
Imperial Power Plant, the newest product offered by The Whitetail Institute, is an annual planting that consists of a mixture of warm season forages that work together to offer an ultra high-protein food source. Completely different than any product developed by the Institute, Power Plant provides more tonnage of browse per acre than any food plot product available.
The unique seed blend includes small amounts of sorghum and sunflowers along with heavy doses of beans and peas. The specially developed legumes found in Power Plant are fast growing and extremely high in protein. Because of the unique blend of forages and fast growing capabilities, Power Plant can be planted in smaller acreages and has a much better chance of surviving relatively heavy browsing.

Imperial Extreme
Extreme is the most drought-resistant perennial blend available for whitetail deer. This amazing product stays green longer than other perennials even during severe drought, scorching heat and bitter cold. It really opens the door to perennial plots in some of the harshest growing regions, including most of Texas, Florida, the mountain West, the Great Plains and Canada. Most anywhere that receives at least 15 inches of rainfall a year.
Extreme can withstand a pH range of 5.4 to 7.5. It is also remarkably heat resistant and cold tolerant. In short, a tough product for extreme conditions.
Most important, Extreme provides a high-quality protein-rich food source all year round. The kind of protein necessary to produce healthy deer and fawns and especially trophy racks in the critical 200-day antler-growing season.

Clear a small pacth ,put some fertalizer on it . let it sit a couple of days and the try some differnt types to find out what will grow good in your area. Whitetail instatute has a starters sample kit that has alittle bit of all of thier products that they sell for $20 . I tried it5 years ago and it worked great in my area. not everything in the kit worked but I found out what worked for me. It cost me $20 plus a cheap chain saw ,a rake , hoe and lots of grease for my elbows. You dont need 1 acre lots cleared. I did 10 ft by 20 ft spots to start ad got bigger over the next couple years. I still by a starters kit every year. Works great.

I think someone saw you coming

The highest cost per acre I ever personally know of was $400/acre for ladino clover and the guy guaranteed a good plot or he'd replant for free.

Yes there are some pricey seeds out there but it's not necessary to spend that kind of money.
