I can't get this cartoon character out of mind! It's got to be a sight to behold.

I have to agreee BTB, it wasn't long ago that coyotes were "nonexistant" here!

Is this it?

Fishers released in Allegheny National Forest

Nine fishers, including eight females, were released on the Allegheny National Forest Dec. 22 1998 along Upper Sheriff Run, a tributary to the Tionesta Creek in Forest and Warren counties. Each of the nine fishers were fitted with radio collars to help researchers track their movements.

Fishers, an attractive, blackish-brown animal, were common in forested regions of Pennsylvania 100 years ago. These swift and elegant, tree climbing members of the weasel family disappeared from the commonwealth around 1900, primarily due to loss of forested habitats and unregulated trapping. Habitat now exists to support a limited number of fishers. Mostly nocturnal and seldom seen, fishers eat mice, voles and shrews, as well as fruits and vegetation. They eat other small mammals as well, and offer natural control of porcupines.

"Last year we unexpectedly trapped more males than anticipated, so releasing eight females this winter will help balance the sex ratio and hopefully increase the odds of reproductive success," said Allegheny National Forest Wildlife Biologist Brad Nelson.

The fisher reintroduction effort began last winter, when 38 fishers, including 11 females - three pregnant - were released along Tionesta Creek. Four were eventually found dead, the victims of predators or collisions with cars. The remaining 34 are thought to be doing well.

The fishers released this year were trapped in New York, and then transported to Penn State University for acclimation. The animals were weighed, measured, vaccinated, earmarked, and examined to determine sex and health. They were fed an extra rich diet to promote weight gain which would help them survive the first few days of their reintroduction to the wild.

Partners in the reintroduction effort include Penn State University, Frostburg State University, the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Wild Resource Conservation Fund, Allegheny National Forest, National Forest Foundation, Northern Allegheny Conservation Association, and the Northwest and Northcentral Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs.

We natives only pronounce it with the short a sound. Did you see many deer off the Beech Creek this year? I had very little success this time around.

Alonpoint, What part of Clinton County do you hunt? Fishers were released in the Clinton County near the "Fish Dam" area about five years ago. One of the guys we hunted bears with saw one this past year over 20 miles from the release sight.

I've done a lot of fishing and hunting along the banks of Upper & Lower Sherrif Run, along with Minister Creek, and have yet to see one of those fishers. I forgot all about that release.
