Actually i know a few by those names but.I am closer to Calais area than anyplace else. I travel up towards Hainseville and Kingman area for a little hunting every once in a while. I fish the St. Croix River quite a bit get a few stripers during the summer months though most are just schoolies. I travel over to the Old Town area to a bird farm in Greenbush for some practice hunting with my setters.

I work for Domtar in Bailyville, have tried my luck on the expanded archery in Bangor/ Brewer area but gave up to many no tresspassing signs/not knowing anyone with enough land to hunt on. I have never fished the Kennebec but have always wanted to I have watch them catch a few stripers and salmon there.

RE: How many Mainers on here???

I just came across a spot today boys that is just screamin HUNT HERE!!! Its a small waterhole on top of a ridge thats all ill say and its a livin bitch to get too but I am going in tomarrow and set up a stand. I only have the next 3-4days to hunt archery and a couple days next week. Low on buck sign but high on deer sign....Tracks up the wazzoooooooooooo. I was told that it gets hammered come opening day of rifle and every day after but no one bow hunts it that they new of. I will lug in a ground blind and a stand the ground blind I will set off the side down wind of the water that should keep me within 40 to the woods on the other side so I can cover the whole thing and the stand I will put about midway up just down the ridge about a 1/2-3/4 mile on a run that comes off the top I donno that one needs a closer look. Anyway I wish me luck and good luck to any of you who are out there.

Todd

RE: How many Mainers on here???

I grew up in Van Buren, and now live in Hampden. I agree with Phil it is real hard to find hunting areas in this area. I do all my bird hunting up north on paper company lands, plenty of old roads to walk. I also go north to chase the big deer. The only time I hunt in the Hampden area is when I take my son out deer hunting. A couple more years and he'll be able to join me for deer camp. Side note...My son and I are fired up for Youth Day this Saturday!!!

Born in Bangor, raised in Gardiner. 7th generation Mainer. Lived in Old Town in College, Stockton Springs (took my second of 5 200# deer there), Searsport, Winterport while working in Bucksport. Currently working in PA, but have 40 acres west of Houlton, and hunt at least a week (the third week of November) in Maine's western mountains every fall. Will be building a retirement home there soon.

RE: How many Mainers on here???

I hear ya craig I like to go to a friends camp every year the second week of november. Its in the NW of the state and on the Canadian Border. Of course the entertainment is going to be more diffacult to get to now that we need passports to go over to it but Oh Well. The pond thing isnt going to happen, obligations at home for the rest of this week and next but I can many fit in a sit or two here in Stockton up on Fletchers Hill or something. I have seen a few does and a skipper in a couple spots around here that I could have tagged but I HATE tagging out before camp unless its something decent. Needless to say I have never tagged out before deer camp...LOL. I didnt get a doe permit this year either. I put in for 7,8, extra in 25 and didnt get squat!!! Non Res did, boy dont that chap my ass!!![:@]oh well not much I can do about it I guess.

Later Guys shoot straight and teach a kid to hunt and fish, not smoke dope and wash it down with Allens!!

RE: How many Mainers on here???

Rabid, me and my brother wryfly go to deer camp during the 2nd week of the season also. We hunt in the nw portions of Maine. The one thing that we found out that works really well in that area are the French-Canadian deer calls. You can still use your current deer call, some of the deer up there are bilingual. If I don't get my deer that week then I may have to utilize my doe permit!

rabidhunter66 10-19-2007 10:36 AM

RE: How many Mainers on here???

What unit is your doepermit in craig 7? I have used those french-canadian deer calls before and your right they work great if you know how to blow in french. But one year they had a strip club within walking distance of the border and I tried to get one of the girls to "Guide" me but she couldnt cross the border.:D

Craig where do you hunt out of?

craigbc 10-21-2007 05:41 PM

RE: How many Mainers on here???

Rabid we hunt out of the Boulet hunting camps during the second week. If that doesn't produce I have a doe permit in district 23, my son got his doe permit in district 26.

I lived in Ellsworth ME for 9 years and now I am in WI. I am trying as much as possible to get back to ME. There is nothing like it....no sea ducks in this place!

Yeah I live in Dresden next to The Bog. I am originally from Wisconsin, in fact I am heading back there in 6 days for 10 days of bow hunting on the home farm. I love Maine, although WI is much better hunting. However I never had moose in my yard in WI like I do in Dresden.I have some good hunting and fishig pics and vids on my home site. Jamie

Are you saying that Wisconsin is better hunting than all of Maine or just the Dresden area, Somerset county and up past their I would bet is as good as hunting as you will find in wisconsin.

RE: How many Mainers on here???

Well unfortunetly I am talking about the whole state. More deer are killed in WI each year by hunters than excist in the entire state of Maine. There is just so much more food there. If you look at the numbers of B&C, P&Y, 200 lb, and even300lbdeer shot in the two states you'll see that WI, Iowa, MN, IL, eally smakoe the rest of the country. There is a reason that WI doesn't have a 200 lb buck club, because there would be way to many members. Go to the Boone & Crocket website. There are red marks for record book deer shot by location, Wisconsin is alomost totaly red, Maine just has some dots. I wish it was the other way around.

I would move back to Maine anyday. I think the hunting is just as good, of course WI has more deer look how big the state is. There is no sea duck hunting in WI. There are many big deer in Maine and not as many hunters. I dont mind WI, I just wish I lived further north.

Alot of the state is less populated by man and alot more predators having lunch with them.. up to and including poachers...

RE: How many Mainers on here???

Man is the greatest predetor. Anyway I don't think it has anything to do with that, WI just has more deer. I would rather live in Maine too... thats why I do. I got a fisher on video while bow hunting the other day. The night before I saw the biggest racked buck I ever had in bow range. I was hunting by the eastern river in Dresden. I couldn't get a shot off, so the next night I put down some doe pee, and this fisher came and followed the pee trail right up to my tree. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Tfq-PbdwBsk

I haven't been out at all except to take my son out during the youth hunt. He got a big spikehorn, they guessed it to wiegh around 120-130 dressed, at the Grandlake Stream tagging station. The scales were down so I can't give the wiegh in wieght. He was quite happy with it tho.
