Mast Crop
 

I've noticed that the red oaks around my house have little or no acorn production this year. The Chestnut oaks are fairly heavy, as well as the walnuts and hickorys. I live in SWC PA., but spend a lot of time deer hunting in the North Central mountains of Clearfield and Elk counties. Any reports on those areas as far as acorn crop this year? The squirrels have been busy up and down the chestnut oaks cutting nuts, but aren't bothering the red oaks. I'll get up to camp shortly, but was wondering if anyone has been looking at this.

I was out scouting both saturday and monday.I found a few places where the acorns were just starting to fall.especially the whites.

He means mast as in nuts. Masts=nuts

I was out in the Southern Tier of WNY near in the Allegany state park and I noticed a few trees have started to drop acorns but the red oak trees where I went were so tall I couldn't tell how many there were holding.

yeah thy are dropping here in pa..i live on a country club and the oaks pound the cars outside.

I've seen acorns almost everywhere I've been. The early ones that fell were rotten inside. The nuts that have dropped w/i th last week or so are ripe.
I believe due to some spotty dry areas the nuts did not fully mature. In a dry year look for oaks on the North and North East facing slopes where you hunt. These areas get less sun and hold moisture longer.

I've not seen any yet this year in my hunting areas:(But if I do find a few trees dropping, that will certainly be the spot to go.
