Are apple scents considerd baiting?
 

Does anyone know if using apple scent to cover up my scent, or put onthe groundis "baiting" and illegal in NY?

most scents are either considered cover's... or attractant's. bait is anything that is introduced into the animals area that can be digested such as corn...saltlicks...apples ect..ect... as for using a apple scent... unless you hunt in a area that has apples you would be better served by using a scent that those deer are used to.

According to the NY Bear hunting regulations or rather bear feeding regulations in NY you can carry up to 1.5 fluid oz of scent or lure on you and it won't be considered "feeding" bears. Raises concerns about what a big bottle of apple scent is though, especially if you are in an area that has both deer and bear hunting going on at the same time.Best thing is to ask or keep the amount you have on you below 1.5 oz. Hope it helps.

No definitely not. I hunt Long Island and have asked DEC.

Went to a seminar in July given by Peter Fiduccia and he discussed how he uses apple and corn scents to attract deer. He just didn't stop there, he also recommended using the fake plastic apples, you know the type people display on their kitchen tables and plastic corn in conjuction with the scents. When questioned if this was baiting, response was no. The apples and corn are "decoys"... Umm I said, so I went out and bought a doze fake apples (can't seem to find corn cheap enough) and going to set a few in trees and on the ground as he described to give it a try. I have plenty of apple trees on the property, but during November they have already fallen or been eaten. I don't cut my corn til spring, so really no need for fake ones.

PS, you can use apple scents even if you don't have an apple tree anywhere nearby, it's a great curosity scent! JIMO:D

According to VA and NJ DEC (via phone call bout 2 yrs ago) Apple and Acorn "scent" is not baiting as long as it has no nutritional value for the animal. But since it has never been addresse in "black and white" it is open to interpratation.

In most states it isn't considered baiting or illegal, because they can't digest it.
