Western Maryland
I am looking into the Green Ridge and Savage River state forests for possible whitetail rifle hunting this coming fall in western md. Has anyone hunted or scouted any of these huge areas of state forest? The reason for me wanting to hunt out there is to hunt a larger area with some nice size mountians. I am curious if it is worth my time hunting any of these spots and how are the deer #'s in those areas? I have never been there I would basically be hunting it blind, I appreciate any suggestions or help. Thank you.

no, i hunt turkeys there alot and ride my 4 wheeler. they have a designated track where u must ride your 4 wheelers, its like 18 miles long, but thats the only place u can hunt. u can hunt off there i beleive, but theres plenty of more acres to hunt where the ATVs cant even be heard. its a very large place. nice campsites, fishing ponds, etc. i like going there for a nice wekeend of hunting (never been there in winter for deer, just spring turkkey)

Deer numbers are not bad for doe's. Bucks on the other hand are a little harder to find. If you are looking for racks...don't. Spikes up there are considered trophies.
I would start by driving into the low lying areas and cross fifteen mile creek to where the deer find a little more solitude. You can get on a ridge there and set up for some deer feeding on adjacent ridges. Be prepared to do some hiking. It's a little demanding, but a nice experience. Good Luck |

Been hunting there for 30 years. It's so bad That I have ran out of place to go and not have company every opening day of rifle season... Chances are you'll find a place to hunt and opening morning you'll see a light coming in on ya:( I'd recomend Savage River State Forest... You won't see as many Baltimorians;) I have a cabin up there so that explains my repeated disapointments:) |
RE: Western Maryland
im a baltimorian lol. WE GOT A PROBLEM?? sike im j.k, i am from b-more, but u are right when it comes to huting, in my opinion, not many people hunt that live there, or atleast that i know of. i have one or two friends that "hunt" , if u want to call it that. they say they hunt ya know, but every time i ask them to come along, its always an excuse. boy im glad i got my girl as a hunting partner, or i would be solo all the time . but yea, i would try another land except GR, too many hunters plain and simple. good luk
