Raplh if what you tried to say earlier was that todays recurve and compounds are a resemblence of their ancestors. i retort by exclaiming, " What you been drinking?" A modern bow of any breed resembles nothing but themsevles. Not to mention the accessories that one can purchase to go with it.Arrows today have no reference to there ancestors either. We fletch with plastic, uni noc, screw in adapters, build them of any number of composits, etc. if you wish to say todays archery equipment is relative of anything the Egyptians used. Then you must admit a crossbow holds those same heritage lines. And a inline MORE resembles an ancient Chinese rifle than a flintlock does. Those were inlines!! A hollow bar loaded with powder and ignited from the aft by flame...no hammer or flint.

I agree with Jason N. I like the sounds of an Earn-A-Buck program. How many hunters pass up does in archery because they're waiting for a buck? Archers took 40,000 antlerless deer and 38,000 antlered deer last year. I wonder how many took a buck early in the season and either stopped hunting for the year or saved their doe tag for gun season. It has to be atleast a couple of thousand. That couple of thousand would be does taken before the rut. And many meat hunters would be forced to shoot the first doe that walks by and not the first deer.

My thoughts on earn a buck... Start bow season Sept 1 doe only not just antlerless. (Archers shouldn't shoot if they cant tell if it's a button buck.) It stays doe only till Oct 1 or until the archer turns in a doe at a check station. Then he can kill a buck (a button buck with a bow should cost us our buck tag) Create an archery only doe tag and make them readily available to the guys willing to kill more than one doe with his bow. Some rifle hunters might object but archers are 1/3 of our hunters but don't kill anywhere near 1/3 of our deer. Till the number gets close, they don't have a biologically sound arguement against it. Let the crossgun guys have at it the same week as the ML guys. It would be a good way to kill one arguement or the other (for or against them) If that doesn't produce an adequate early doe kill, let the rifles at em!

Terry, Please take the time to READ our posts before you reply. I didn't say they loaded the same, I said they were held aimed and shot the same as a gun. Ralph specifically said that modern compounds are drastically different and traditional bows had changed only a little. It aint him thats been drinkin.

BTbowhunter.....it is fun. nerve racking, but fun. I didn't carry a spear....just went along for the ride. They did all the shooting and laceratin'. They surround them with dogs then move in at close range. Those bamboo Xbows shoot slick for a stick-&-twine weapon, and rivercane style arrows with trade style points. Not even close to a good selfbow of our knowledge for performance, but fairly accurate out to about 25-30 yards. Quite a bit different than a modern Xbow.

I can't believe that in a 2 week buck and doe season, we took the same number of deer as in a 2 week buck and 3 day does season. So I guess they should just go back to the old format so all the slobs won't have to leave the deer lay.

I think they need to spend some time and money to invest in check stations and better reporting of harvested deer. I think these guestimates that they use are seriously out of line.

I like the idea of earning a buck. I know many archers who take their buck and don't worry about a doe until rifle season (but that is because they like the rifle hunt as well.) Maybe they could earn an additional doe tag as well??

Cant begin to imagine how they estimated this kill. Everything changed. Butchers shutting down the first or second day. At least they had a long time to develop their estimting strategy before. this time there has to be some WAG factor in the mix. (Wild A$$ Guessing)

WE NEED CHECK STATIONS!!!!!

Two reasons for that. One is that we take most of our harvests on opening day. The second day most of the rest. The saturday the rest pretty much. They rest of the days see very little pressure and harvest. Deer go into their tunnel systems and it takes a lot of pressure to move them out. They get pretty good at the game after two days of our usual doe season. You could make it a month and most of us wouldn't take a deer after those first two days.

The Satudays would of produced a higher harvest if we had a blanket of snow instead a windy rainy weather. So bad weather held the harvest down too.

Pops,

I couldn't have said it any better than that last post of yours. I agree 100%....same thing for you BT....the same page when it comes to trying a new proposal.

And the "Earn a buck" program sounds like a viable option for the problem of archers not harvesting enough does prior to the rut.

Ok, now who wants to go to a game commissioner and tell them our ideas? <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Lets bury em with letters, Thats what got us two weeks in November against all odds!

Has anyone seen an official position from UBP on this? I'm a life member but haven't seen much from them since GA took over!

Thank you! I'm Damn proud to be called both a UBP lifer and a right wing extremist! The fact that you consider them to be insulting says volumes!
